    How do I disable windows 10 Update services?

    I'm once again asking for your, help.
    I just installed a new copy of windows 10, and I like the version I have.
    I need to disable the update services to ensure this copy is not altered.

    I need help remembering how to go about this. Now I read that there is at least three types of Medic services, that run every once in a while to reset and ensure updates are working. So this service needs disabling too.
    (SIH - Server Initiated Healing - scheduled task used by Microsoft to trigger the Windows Update Medic Service.)

    What ways can I got about doing this?
    Thank you!

    Do you like being exposed? Are you ok with risking your banking and other personal info?

    No updates means no updates to security essentials, no security patches for 0 day vulnerabilities, and more.

    I know what this fully means and the risks. At my age I'm not even remotely concerned. They cant hack me in my grave and I maybe one step away. My computer will remain but I'm not going to be effected by it.

    Now, with your warning out of the way, lets get back to the task at hand. The question, disabling windows 10 updates.

    I'm even open to disabling it, with the ability for me to manually enable it again. It does not have to be permanent.
    But I do want that say so. I need to disable it to ensure my copy of windows 10 is stable for other reasons. Security is just a afterthought. its not my main concern.

    It should be your main concern, troubleshoot the stability. Identiy theft doesnt stop at the grave, and can cause kids etc issues cleaning it up, but disable it if you must, not my machine or hassle lol.

    No, this is why MS has created dozens of tasks and services to mitigate just this. Do not go head on, go around.

    Block svchost.exe in the firewall, but make sure to allow DNS requests and checking for certificates.
    Or disable DNS Cache service, then you do not even need to allow DNS requests, just certificates.

    Or create a nonexistent symlink, Windows will check for updates, but it will fail to download them.
    Code:
    rd "%WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution\Download" /s /q
    mklink /d "%WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution\Download" "X:\Download"

    @OtherWay1982:
    Don't you just love it when you ask for computer help and you get advice on how to handle your personal life? (Me neither.)

    So ... I've disabled updates by simply changing the network settings to metered.
    I'm running Windows version 1809 ... four years out of date. No problems at all.

    What does metered mean?
    A metered network connection is one where you have to pay based on usage.
    Windows will not download updates over a metered connection ... to prevent you from having to pay for the network time.

    By default Windows treats all of your connections as not metered.
    Changing them to metered will prevent updates.

    To make this change:
    1. Copy this text to a plain text file using notepad:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\DefaultMediaCost]
    "3G"=dword:00000002
    "4G"=dword:00000002
    "Default"=dword:00000002
    "Ethernet"=dword:00000002
    "WiFi"=dword:00000002

    2. Save it to a file on the desktop called metered.reg

    3. Open a file explorer window and double-click the metered.reg file. All done.

    With all your connections set to "2" (which means "metered") Windows will not download any updates.

    Once in a while you'll get a notification saying that "Windows cannot download an update".
    Success! Simply ignore that notification.

    Note: I still keep my Windows Defender running. That's the Microsoft anti-virus.
    It's not affected by the "metered" thing, above.
    Every couple of weeks it just pops up a reminder to update it.
    All I do is click the reminder and it updates. Simple.
