    Defender updates...

    Winver: 21H2 (OS Build 19044.2130)

This is the update in question:

    Defender updates...-defender-update.jpg

The Defender Intelligence Update website shows this:

    Defender updates...-change-log.jpg

To my recollection.... Two days or so ego, the same update had been installed.

Why is an update, that may had been installed and has no update, trying to install?

What do you mean by "same"?
    - Defender definition updates are always labelled as KB2267602.
    - If it was trying to install the same definition, such as your 1.377.418.0, then that would be a surprise.

You can use Event viewer to check the record of individual definition updates [with their Security intelligence version, aka Anti-virus version & Anti-spyware version as reported by the Defender user interface]
    Log - Microsoft-Windows-Windows Defender/Operational
    Source - Windows Defender
    EventIDs - 2000,2001 {2001 are failures}

    Thanks Denis,,,

To be frank, I've never looked at the Defender logs, or have I seen these updates previously; but you are correct. During the last 30-days or so, there had been 72 intelligence updates, or Event ID 2,000. During this time the security intelligence version went from 1.375.566.0 to 1.377.418.0.

My systems don't have the Defender active, replaced by Vipre Advanced Security. Out of the four W10 Pro systems, same versions as in the OP, there's only one system that wants to apply the intelligence updates. On this system, it started to warn me about the pending update and once the update applied, the system required rebooting. The system never did that previously, it's only started to do it sometimes 3-4 days ego.

My apologies for not looking at this issue deeper prior to posting...

Defender does get 'platform updates' as well i.e. changes to the application itself rather than merely to the definitions it works with.
I don't recall any of them requiring a reboot afterwards but I suppose it's possible.

Platform updates change the "Antimalware Client Version" number shown in Defender, Settings, About.

My last platform update was on 14th October.
    Log - System
    Source - WindowsUpdateClient
    EventID - 19

    All the best,
