    This How to doesn't work

Hi, for some time I've been wanting to have some control over automatic updates as they frequently crop up at a most inconvenient time (yes, I know I can defer them but I want control!). I've tried this Howto which is supposed to use the same registry keys as the Group Policy Editor in W10 Pro but it isn't working. Any thoughts?

My version is W10 Home 21H2 build 19044.1826.

    Hello @Gwaihir,

I don't know if this is what you want, but this is what I use . . .

    > How to use CMD script and VBScript to Control Windows Update in Windows 10

    I hope this helps.

Updates for W10 are pretty infrequent now - maybe one every couple of months. The fact is the more you fight updates, the more you get in a tangle. As updates for W10 are nearly all security updates, deferring them too long is a bad plan.

Just click on pause updates for 7 days, and do them at your leisure.

Hi, this topic has been discussed many many times.

You can disable Windows Update altogether and take (back) control - sound familiar? - using 1 of the 3rd party tools such as
WUmgr, WUMT or see the tutorial in the post above
    or
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

    (related):
Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10

    You will be aware of:
Change Active Hours for Windows Update in Windows 10

and there are further tutorials concerning update-related restarts in the huge searchable Tutorial section.

    Also
How to Specify Target Feature Update Version in Windows 10

Of course, you could update to Pro and benefit (as I do) from Notify (as in the guide you posted)...

I've tried this Howto which is supposed to use the same registry keys as the Group Policy Editor in W10 Pro
Which registry keys work in Home (vs Pro)?
Not all registry keys equivalent to a group policy either exist or have the same effect in Home as Pro.

tenforums Tutorials give both the Group Policy options and the registry equivalent, and try to be as accurate as possible as to whether something applies in Home.

As such, I commend the Tutorial section to you.

Just set your network connections as metered and the only update that will sneak through [once a year] is a particular update to WU itself***.
Set Wireless Network Metered Connection - TenForumsTutorials
Set Ethernet Connection as Metered or Unmetered - TenForumsTutorials
    - You'll still be able to run WU yourself whenever you want.

*** It was called KB4023057 for years. I think it is now called KB5005463. See, for example,

Yes, that is normal. There are a few group policies that Home specifically ignores, and that is one of them.

This option will not work in Windows 10 Home. Microsoft has prevented disabling automatic updates in the Home edition.

Ah, I wondered if that might be it. Thanks Bree. I'll look at one of the other options suggested. Thanks everyone.

    Noted no reply.

That script tutorial is in part of the forum restricted to those who've posted more...
