    Windows/Feature Update issues.

Neighbor has a generic ASUS desktop stuck on Windows 10 Home x64 1903.

I went over to help him get updated, but no luck.
WU downloads the updates no problem but then fails at around 20% install.

Already tried the Reset WU batch file... no luck.
    Tried In-Place upgrade... no luck.

Neighbor has Trend Micro AV. During the 1st IPU, AV popped up no warnings, but IPU failed.
Then I ran SFC and DISM... RestoreHealth. SFC found and fixed a few errors.

    Tried IPU again... still failed.

Completely uninstalled Trend Micro, and tried the IPU again. It failed again.

I used the same ISO from the first IPU, for all three IPUs.
Now I'm thinking that maybe Trend Micro might have damaged the ISO during it's creation with the MCT.
Today, when we get started again, I will try with a completely new ISO.

I'm also gonna try this, before today's IPU.
    Would Disabled Services Prevent Updates?

NOTE: After I removed Trend Micro... Defender silently updated to latest version.

Trend Micro Remnant File Remover Tool removes any leftover Trend Micro files from your computer so you can install the latest version without experiencing any issues.

Yeah... I went there... tried that tool... it ONLY removes Trend Micro IF you intend to reinstall. :/
In the end... I used REVO and removed all the leftovers as well.

It seems to have worked... Defender woke up, updated itself and was a happy camper.

Neighbors computer works... fine. It's just stuck on 1903.

No. I still have the "stuck on 1903" issue.
    ONLY Defender updated.

Why did the in-place upgrade did not work?

I think that the IPU didn't work three times, because the ISO created with MCT, was created when Trend Micro was still installed.
My current assumption is that the ISO itself may have been damaged by Trend Micro.
But it'll be an hour or two before I can get back on the neighbor's computer.

During all three IPUs... it made it to 82% and then failed.

Let us know how it went also don't forget to use SetupDiag is a free diagnostic tool by Microsoft that is designed to find and parse Windows 10 setup log files to determine why an upgrade or update failed to install on a computer system.

SetupDiag works only on devices running Windows 10. The second requirement is that it depends on the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 which needs to be installed on the device it is run on.

If you run SetupDiag without parameters, it attempts to locate log files that Windows 10 creates during the upgrade process in the default folders on the device.

The program creates a results.log file in its directory when it completes the scan which includes upgrade issues that it detected in the log files during parsing.

SetupDiag creates a zip archive of all log files that it processed on top of that which it saves as Logs.zip in the same directory as well.

    @FreeBooter

Almost forgot... when I go to Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off... there's no list.
He originally bought the computer from Best Buy, and for three years only they serviced it.

So I have no clue what they might have done.
I realize that I could just do a clean install. The owner only has about 3-4 programs on there.
I could also just leave it on 1903. The owner doesn't go to any iffy websites... ever

He (and I) also have a problem with our Cricket phones (completely different accounts).
If he gets a call and doesn't answer it.... it forwards the call to MY phone, even though call forwarding is turned off.
Even Cricket can't figure it out. Right now, we have 5 escalation tickets in. So they will be calling today as well.

I'm wondering if his house hasn't slipped into... The Twilight Zone.

Clean install is definitely the easiest option here...
Depending on the initial failure message, could be stuck on driver migration, on a fragment of Trend Micro (search the registry), or a range of other possible issues...

Just FYI here are the 'rules' setupdiag, exe uses in attempting to anayse log files for known cases and pick out a useful bit of info from the logs:
