Bizarre WU issue- have to launch Wu from CMD & 3 updates wont install?

My Sound card driver went all of a sudden. I could not restore it. I uninstalled it, then installed it, then rebooted. No solution. So I turned my attention to Windows update.
I tried to invoke Windows update, it would not repsond to click.
I resorted to running CMD as admin, and typing in: >control update

Then I ran windows update but it failed on these three, especially the last one.
I tried sfc scannow and Dism, both said no errors and I rebooted - what is going on here?

    How long did you wait?

Also check your disk (Hard Disk Sentinel - includes SSDs)
    and if ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt

Do you have a recent disk image you can restore? (E.g. one created using Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper etc...)

Lacking that (which is endlessly recommended here) and if the above pass, you could of course try an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data

That does not show any failure just that the download has not started.

It might take a while due to your settings, or using your PC.

Settings > Update and security > Advanced options > Delivery Optimisation > Advanced options.

I never bother with the "Previews" as the real one is about 2-3 weeks later anyway.

Thanks. I dont have that option for previews. I left the computer updating overnight. It remained stuck on 0%.
Never seen this before. What can I do to get this thing going ?

    - given your earlier sudden and unexpected problems

If ok run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and report result
    and if ok try

Preview updates: Assuming you have Home you don't have the group policy options to block those.

This may help (not tried it myself as I have Pro)

Thanks. I did a chkdsk yesterday, it was OK.
I ran the batch file in the link above, and this is what I got:

    I'll reboot and try again.

    Thanks- note the tutorial says
You must be signed in as an administrator to reset Windows Update.
Also note that running a disk check with a program such as Hard Disk Sentinel is quite different to running chkdsk.

I did run that .bat file as Admin actually.

The tutorial requires the account you are logged in to be an admin account. That's what the text I quoted says.

Quite a few have used this tutorial successfully, so if you have followed the instructions correctly and still have a problem with it not running, then it will be time to try something else.

Once you have considered the above, when was the last time W. Update ran successfully?

And don't forget about Hard Disk Sentinel.

Do you have a suitable System Restore point?

I logged into the Admin a/c and ran it. Same output: Access denied, Failed to stop.

With Hard Disk Sentinel, only the DOS version is free and it looks like I have to make a bootable.
Is there a windows GUI version free ?
