    stop w11

    Hi all,
turned on the ol' girl this a.m. and buggar, got a pop up saying W11 is downloading. Yikes, got to the update page and yep 2% downloaded. I paused it for seven days and am aware on advanced setting I can pause longer but how can I stop it altogether?

Hi, note that should you be unable to stop it, you can allow the upgrade to complete. You then have 10 days by default to roll back to Win 10.

Are you or have you been an Insider?

Windows 11 should not download on its own, unless you're an Insider. This is an upgrade you opt in to - at least that's how it is described.

This was my experience of stopping it once the upgrade had started:
    Abort pending Windows 11 upgrade

    Note that
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
alone does not seem sufficient, but will clean up partial downloads.

Notice the various ways suggested to stop it in the future including

No I've never been an "insider". What really annoys me is the damn thing gave no indication or option of imminent download, it just started. It seems too hard, (not possible?), to stop it so I'll do as you suggest, let it download and revert back, then use one of the registry/ group editor fixes. Thanks for the help.

Hmmmmm, restarted the W11 update and it got to 8% and stopped with this message:
"This update can't be downloaded and installed because it's not yet ready for your device"
I know my hardware is OK as I checked some time back. It may be because I have Winaero tweaker and Spybot beacon set to change some settings and block whatever telemetry etc relates to M$ sneaking around. Not to worry, if that stops W11 all the better

    Sounds like you've been lucky.

Thanks for the PM. To prevent this download occurring again (and Win 11 should not download all by itself normally) please consider my post #2 and use one or more of those.

Winaero's tweaker has nothing about Win 11; concern about MS's telemetry is grossly overdone (plenty of discussions about that on tenforums).

No, sorry, I didn't mean that. The topic of this thread is about stopping the download and installation of Win 11. So, in a much longer and more precise answer (I was trying to save myself some typing), WinAero's tweaker does not (to me) appear to have any option to stop the download and installation of Win 11.

If, on the other hand, you find such an option, do please post that. Thanks.

ok will continue here seeing as OP's issue resolved.

curious to know when Windows 11 will update on my machine as in schedule, time line.

    my machine:

    Edition Windows 10 Home
    Version 21H2
    Installed on ‎20/‎05/‎2022
    OS build 19044.1766
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4170.0

now to make it less confusing i'm up to 21H2 so if i setup my machine via this scenario for feature updates

How to stop upgrade Windows 11 automatically

when widows changes its version say to 22H1 for example is that the 11 upgarde and whilst i want it to remain in latest 10 version 21H2 and future feature updates for 21H2, 21H3 etc etc for example.

the video i linked will help explain what i'm trying to say a bit easier.

    UPDATE:

i went ahead according to video instructions, second half of video for HOME, and did the registry alterations to remain at 21H?

The issue with the suggestions you linked is that my W10 is 22H2 and the W11 update version being downloaded is 22H2
