    cumulative update installations keep failing

I have a VM I must use for work-related stuff that has stopped taking patches, and I'm at a loss where to go now. I hate to have to rebuild it from scratch since there's a lot installed on it. It's currently at 19044.1526, which I believe is the February patch. March, April, and now May will not install.

    Here's what I've done:
    1) chkdsk /f (no errors)
    2) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (no errors)
    3) sfc /scannow (no errors)
    4) Windows Update troubleshooter
    5) deleted the entire contents of c:\windows\softwareDistribution
    6) manually installing the .msu file

    There's plenty of disk space.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks

I'd try going to the Windows Update Catalog and download KB501942 and manually installing it. That might set things right.

I agree. If nothing else, it will rule out any possible glitches when using Windows Update.

I have listed the page below for you that you will need . . .

    > KB501942 - 2022-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10

It is quite a big download so it might take a little while depending on your ISP provider and package.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately I've already done that using the .msu, same errors as always. Is there a place to get a .cab file?

    Hello @kjlkjadfasdfasd,

Have you tried installing the update using DISM? . . .

I tried the way listed in this article, no luck. I also extracted the .cab files from the .msu and tried using the instructions on this website, and that also did not work. I figured it was hopeless, so I tried doing an 'upgrade' to 21H1, and that failed, too.

I then decided to download the full ISO and try that 'upgrade,' and that did work. I am now on the May 2022 update.
I am hopeful that going thru that process reset whatever internal database was broken.

Good on you for being persistent. I sounds like you’re good to go now.
