    Windows 10 License

I recently custom built my own desktop computer and had questions regarding getting a windows license. The price for windows 10 home is $130, while pro is $200 (ouch!)

I had an old retired dell laptop with windows 8 home, so I decided to use its license key to activate my freshly installed windows 10, it worked! I have read that windows upgrade from 8 to 10 isn't possible anymore so I have the following questions:

    1) How was I still able to upgrade and use the windows 8 license key to activate windows 10 in 2022?

    2) Also I have read that OEM licenses (which is what my old laptop would have had) can't be transferred to new hardware, so what's up with that? mine seems to be working, will it just stop suddenly?

    3) I am looking into upgrading from windows 10 home to pro, but that costs $100 rather than $70 (which is the difference between home and pro), this doesn't make sense. Anyway articles online indicate that the upgrade of an OEM license again can't be transferred, is that true?

    4) Will I also get a free upgrade to windows 11 pro (after purchasing the $100 upgrade)?

    5) Since I used the old windows 8 key and logged into my microsoft account, do I now have a digital license for windows 10, where do I find this as a purchased product in my account?

    6) Should I just skip the hassle and purchase the $200 windows 10 pro license from microsoft online (that would be $100 more)?

I know its a lot, but I appreciate any help on the matter,

    Thanks in advance - Alex

    Alex,

1 "windows upgrade from 8 to 10 isn't possible anymore"
Anybody saying that is thinking of the official status of the offer [one year from the date of Windows 10 release] rather than the oft-reported reality which is that people have continued to be able to upgrade from Windows 7/8.1 ever since. There is no indication that MS are going to bother putting a stop to this.

4 Any computer licensed for Windows 7/8.1/10 can upgrade to the same Edition of Windows 11.

5 Your activation is shown in Settings, Updates, Activation. I imagine it is a digital licence but that dialog will give you the actual answer.

I cannot answer your questions about Pro. I assume you have a particular requirement for some of its additional capabilities.
    - My current computers are all Home. I do not feel constrained when using them.
    - I also have one semi-retired computer with Pro. I never felt any benefit when using it.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,

You don't, it is not a purchased product held in your Microsoft account. For Windows 10 a digital license is assigned to the hardware ID of the PC and stored on Microsoft's activation servers. This is completely independent of any Microsoft account you may have. In fact, you don't even need a Microsoft account to get a digital license for your PC.

Linking your digital license to your Microsoft account is an entirely optional extra, but not a requirement. It can help if you ever need to run the activation troubleshooter after changing a motherboard (and hence the hardware ID of the machine) for example.

    6) Should I just skip the hassle and purchase the $200 windows 10 pro license from microsoft online (that would be $100 more)?
Ask yourself, do you really need Pro? If so, what extra features do you think you must have? Some of my machines have Home, others have Pro. For 99% of what I use them for both do everything I need.

There is only one Pro feature that I use regularly, Hyper-V for running virtual machines. But you can run virtual machines in Home if you install VirtualBox or VMWare, so it isn't essential to have Pro if that's something you'd want to do.

    The questions from the OP:
    1. Microsoft is still allowing Windows 7 and 8 to upgrade to Windows 10.

    2. Microsoft is now allowing OEM licenses to be transferred - and it is really copied, not transferred.

    3. There's a whole bunch of websites where you can purchase Windows 10 Pro product keys for less then $25 (U.S.), and some less than $15 (U.S.). And here's the thing with digital licensing for Windows 10/11 - once you get the digital license established for Home or Pro, I have never read or heard of an instance where Microsoft has revoked a digital license. They may block a product key from being used again, but I have never heard of an instance of an established digital license getting revoked.

    4. All of the product keys and digital licenses for Windows 10 work with Windows 11. There is zero difference in the product keys and digital licenses between Windows 10 and 11.

    5. You do now have a digital license for Windows 10, with a link established to it on your Microsoft Account, but there will be no purchase information for it.

    6. That is a personal choice. I would not.

People are even starting to report on here that they are getting digital licenses (activation) for Windows 10 and they have no idea where it is coming from!

As a former Microsoft MVP, that had a complimentary MSDN account, all of my PC's now have multiple legit Windows 10 Digital Licenses. Home, Pro, Workstation, even Enterprise. They never go away, even now that I am out of the program. The only DL's that show up in my Microsoft Account are the ones currently in use. What is currently installed and activated on said device.
None of my current hardware will run Windows 11, it doesn't meet the minimum requirement. I'm not losing any sleep over that fact.

The one doesn't necessarily follow from the other.

I'm sure all your hardware could run Windows 11, what it can't do without a workaround is install it or upgrade to it. Once you've bypassed the system checks and installed 11 it will run on almost anything, however inappropriate.

I'm not losing any sleep over that fact.

Me, I'm enjoying seeing just how far below spec I can get away with

Fortunately, after a couple of false starts, my daughter chose wisely....
