Do I Have To Update Windows 10 Build From 20H2?

So once a year the end of March or early April I have been manually updating my Windows 10 PC's to the build that was released the previous October / November.

I was doing this since sooner or later MS was going to force an update on me if I did not do it manually at a time when I wanted it done and by doing it manually I was able to only have to update once a year.

I seem to remember reading last year some where that MS was not going force update Windows 10 PC's to a new version anymore.

    Is my memory correct?

I would rather not have to spend the time to update three PC's and spend all the time it takes to setup everything back up the way I want it since MS just has to setup stuff they way they think it should be every time the Windows 10 build is updated to a new one.

    Hello idahosurge ,

You can easily update from 20H2 to 21H2 by installing this small enablement KB: Microsoft introduces the next feature update to Windows 10: 21H2 if you chose to do so.

I recently updated from 2004 to 21H2 doing this without issue - didn't lose any settings.

You shouldn't lose any settings updating this way that I'm aware of, but it's always recommended to have a current backup. Use Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect or other similar software.

until MS forces the upgrade starting May 2022 as 20H2 home/pro goes EOL on May 10, 2022

    that's good
but did you set the TargetReleaseVersionInfo registry key to 20H2 on your 20H2 machine?

disabling auto updates alone is not good enough, Matthew
unless you have the TargetReleaseVersionInfo & other related reg entries to keep your existing Win10 version

I have never made changes to the following keys. So far, so good.

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

I will wait and see whether M$ can force an upgrade on my Windows 10.

It will be epic when MS kept pushing newer windows version that's more bloated than before, to help OEM drop a new hardware to us to buy... hahahha... so sad...

    That's called Windows 11, isn't it?

It would seem unlikely that MS will introduce major new changes to Win 10 given Oct '25 is end of life for Home & Pro.

As to how many changes are made should you upgrade or perform an in-place upgrade repair install - well, that depends on which changes you've made. I choose to make changes that are unaffected by this, bar one which is easily redone.

And you can stay on a particular build if you choose to, and know what you're doing - both how to do that and what the consequences may be.

One consequence may be related to security risk, something to be reckoned with.
