Feature Updates Failing With Users Folder on Drive Other Than C:

    Windows 10 pro 21H1 64 bit.

    Hello Everyone.

I have my Users folder installed on drive D: using the steps in Kari's wonderful tutorial.

The last two Feature Updates 20H2 and 21H1 would fail and revert to previous version during update installation. I normally download the ISO using the Media Creation tool but I also tried running the online update. What usually happens is the update proceeds until the first reboot. When it reboots the update does not continue and is back to the version I started out with. Once or twice it rebooted into the corrupt/missing Users folders mode and an image restore was needed.

From the errors it seems the updates need the Users folder to be on the system drive (C:) and would complete if I moved the Users folders to the C: drive via again Kari's tutorial.

The main problem with doing this is it literally takes hours to move the folders to the C: drive. I shorten the process somewhat by backing up and removing as much of the User data that can be without corrupting the profile(s). Stuff like media (pictures, MP3s, images etc.), email, Appdata files and so forth. Even so it takes hours. I normally kick the migration off before going to sleep so I don't know exactly how long it has been taking. Oddly enough migrating from the C: drive takes less time.

Windows update is pushing me to update/upgrade to 21H2 or Windows 11 (even though I haven't obtained the TPM module for my mobo).

I don't want to do a clean install if possible. Is this still a problem with 21H2 or a problem with Windows 11? Is there a workaround other than migrating the Users folder back to the C: drive?

    Thanks

Hi, suggest you ask under that tutorial
Move Users Folder Location in Windows 10
as to the impact of that change on feature updates.

There seems nothing in the text of the tutorial to suggest there would be a conflict, but absence of information is not proof.

This (by Kari) states it is 'completely safe'
    https://win10.guru/relocating-users-...t-is-100-safe/

Even some globally known IT writers have posted articles about how the relocation should not be done because it, according to them, makes updates and upgrades impossible. Unfortunately, some users believe these comments from writers and have never tried and tested this on their own, only because those writers are known as “experts.”
If you get confirmation that a feature update should succeed even with that change, then you would need help identifying the cause of the failure.

Only a couple of people sometimes devote the hours and perhaps 10s of posts to trying to do that.

To avoid the possibility of such contention I avoid making such changes myself, but that's just my personal approach.

Having gotten my first computer in '92 with MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1 then a job in a computer store in '94 I've experienced a lot of builds and installs and the preeminent thing was that programs' installers look for things being in a standard location in the OS. Many were in having the swapfile/paging file and a Temp folder for working space, messing with those can cause issues. I don't Move my User folders but if possible make the same on a second partition or a second drive then wherever possible change the default locations such as for Browser's downloads, word processor files, etc.

In the end, your main issue is that you are keeping all your main data on the user drives but really should store them on a separate drive, and keep user directories on C drive and just use them for temporary data syncing data to other drives/partitions.

I had no issues with earlier feature updates. Unfortunately I did not record the error that it was reporting but at the time searches revealed it had to do with the location of the User files.

I tested the 21H2 update several times on a Virtual Machine setup it seems to have no problems. The problem is reproducible on a VM with the 20H2 and 21H1 feature updates. I was even able to get the update (not clean install) of Windows 11 to work by adding the LabConfig registry entries into Windows 10 before running setup. However, I've been unable to reproduce this. I was even able to install Windows 11 with a non-EFI boot on a VM. Again I can't reproduce this. It might be because I recently updated VirtualBox.

    Thanks for the thoughts.

Suggest you raise this under the relevant tutorial with a link to this thread as you've looked into this at some length... others who use this kind of configuration may then share their experience.

If you do post in Kari's tutorial I suggest you
    - include those error codes
    - state which previous Version updates have succeeded since you moved your Users folder.

I have no experience of your problem so I cannot give you any direct advice. I do not move my Users folder because I don't see the point.
    - You can just use another drive without doing so.
    - Your method allows your OS drive to avoid the space used up by AppData but that does not seem to be much of a benefit to me.

    All the best,
    Denis

Maybe creating a symlink or a junction from C:\Users could trick the update to work. I Never tried, but it's easy to setup.

Well I tried to apply the 21H2 update. It failed. Here is the error message:

    0x80070002 - 0x2000A
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during PREPARE_FIRST_BOOT operation.
I moved the Users folder back to the system drive and tried the update but it failed also. Restored my system from an image backup and I'm re-downloading the 21H2 ISO in-case it was corrupted or perchance Microsoft updated something.

Note: I tried running setup.exe as an administrator. I tried activating the Administrator account and running setup from there (after moving Users to the system drive). I haven't tried doing a safe/clean boot via MSCONFIG. Will try after the ISO downloads. With my slow DSL it takes about an hour per Gig so the download will take a while.

Not necessary, it will demand elevation itself when it starts running.

    Not advisable.
This account, which is no more powerful than any Admin account you have created yourself anyway, has undocumented limitations which have varied over time.
You would not know if anything that happened was caused by a fault with your computer or an undocumented account limitation.

    Best of luck,
    Denis
