How to hide Win 11 upgrade option

Some of our users, on their domain-joined workstations, with Win 10 Pro 21H2 are seeing the option to upgrade to Windows 11 and are asking whether they should click 'Download and install'. I need to make this go away for the time being.

I am aware of some tutorials out there that suggest to set 'Select the target Feature Update version' to 21H1 or 21H2 in group policy under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business.

The question is: Will this actually get rid of the 'Download and install' button once the button is already displayed to the user (in Settings \ Update & Security \ Windows Update)?

I am also aware that in theory I should be able to disable the TPM in BIOS but that is impractical. It should be a software solution.

    Any advice? Thank you!

    Hi Ben,

I only used the "Select the target Feature" GPO and have not seen any nag about Windows 11 on any machines supporting it or not.

I don't know if implementing this policy after the nag screen came up will actually remove it but it's worth trying.

On a related issue, I had been looking for a long time for a way to remove the red notification in Settings that 'this PC can't run Windows 11' for unsupported machines. Both this notice, and your 'Download and install' one can only appear after the PC has been assessed for compatibility (in your case) or not (in my case). The results of this assessment for Windows 11 are held in the registry in the key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators\CO21H2

(CO = cobalt, the code name for Windows 11)

Delete the CO21H2 key (and the related (CO21H2Setup key, if it exists) and the PC goes back to the 'not yet tested for 11' state. This should remove the upgrade offer, if not immediately then on the next check for updates. Your policy should then prevent it being re-tested. More here:

Thank you. I will test setting one key (target feature update) and deleting the other (TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators).

There seem to be two different messages that can be displayed once Windows determines that it can upgrade to Windows 11. The first message is in my original post. The other message merely informs about Win 11 compatibility but does not offer a download. I assume in the first case, the computer model is successfully queried against a database of compatible devices and in the second case the computer meets the requirements but is not in the database.

This is what I am getting in a Hyper-V generation 2 virtual machine.

    Hello @Ben Hastings,

The GPO and REG suggestions seem to be a viable proposition.

    Just an idea.

Is there no way that you can have the computers turned on when nobody is there and then run a Script that forces a Windows Update on ALL machines and then force a click of Stay on Windows 10 for now?

Or, if it is triggered by a KB number, then Hide the KB number.

Also, have a look at this thread => How can I Block pop ups touting Windows 11?

    I hope this helps.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I have been able to test this today I can confirm that this works for all the messages that can appear. I have created a group policy that fixes this.. This means that the messages will go away even after they were already triggered and shown to the user.

The specifics of this solution are: 'target Feature Update version' is set to '21H2'. That is all. No additional registry changes are required. It makes all Windows 11 related messages go away that can appear in Windows Update (see above) that I know of. Which are

    1. Message that offers to download and install
    2. Message that informs that the computer is compatible (with no option to install)
    3. Message that informs that the computer incompatible

This solution disables ALL updates and update notifications.
    Thats bad.

I want to allow all Window 10 updates (for v22H2) but
hide (only) Windows 11 upgrade notifications.

Upgrade notifications in Windows Update settings dialog page are acceptable as long as they do not appear
as separate full screen notifications on every Windows 10 startup.

    How can I achieve this?

You can set a target release version, set that for a Windows 10 version and you should stop being bothered with prompts to upgrade to 11.
