Windows 10 update no longer works

    Win 10 Pro 64-bit version 1909,

Have not been able to update windows. I don't know how long updates have not been working. Could be several months? All the applications run fine. Antivirus (Windows Defender) and other 3rd party anti-mailware apps all update normally and work. I didn't know I had a problem until I manually tried to run windows update a few months ago and found it was failing.

Looks like automatic updates was turned off. And I can not adjust or modify some of the windows update parameters.

Looking for ideas .. Wondering if I should try a fresh install ? Problem is the PC has a lot of fancy video and graphic software installed (it's only used for video editing etc.) It would be near to impossible for me to get some of them re-installed.

Try to Reset Windows 10 Update first.

    Here are tutorials:

    tenforums tutorials reset-windows-update-windows-10

Also check if you have any restrictions set in Group Policy. Assuming you didn't install any program that would prevent Windows update.

    Do you get any errors?

Already tried the "reset-windows-update" long ago. I "think" I got many errors like this: "The module xxx failed to load The specified module could not be found" Like 20 or more of them. But frankly I've done many dozens of things over the last several weeks and I can't say I remember what exactly the 'errors" were or if there were any .. just that nothing has worked.

But let me run that again so I can quote you any errors I get. Sorry, my memory is not so good these days <grin>

Originally I thought the problem was because my windows "System Reserved Partition" was too small. For some reason it was only 100 MB. Maybe because the original system was a Windows 7 pro system and this current Win 10 was the result of an upgrade? One of the errors pointed to the SRP being too small. So I increased the size of the SRP to 500 MB. That didn't fix it.

I have also found the "group policies" might be problematical. Only because the update screen says "Some settings are managed by your organization". Don't know what that is all about but I know I was working in that area too but couldn't find anything that made a difference.

I'll run that "reset windows update" thing again and post results here. Below are some error samples Thanks ..
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I ran the batch file. Noticed as lines were scrolling "File not found" error was coming up often. Finished batch run and prompted for reboot and said finished okay. Ran update which failed with this same error:

Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2 - Error 0x80070003
Status: Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later: Error code 0x80070003)

    Next?

    - - - Updated - - -

How do I delete the images that keep showing up at the end of my post?

Could be a number of things.. Most probably wrong registry entry, or some bad drivers.
You can check your system state with command "sfc /scannow" (in admin command prompt)

At this point I would suggest Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade
It is pretty straightforward. Download latest Windows 10 ISO file from MS (same language and version), save it to your hard drive, mount ISO and run upgrade.

It would be smart to make system image before you do so. Never seen anything went wrong, but you never know.

If you have group policies set that are significant here, an in-place upgrade repair install will not resolve that.

Clearly the key is to know where you've come from and how when making significant changes, and ensure you know or have a way back. Given the number of potential issues you raise, it is uncertain as to what possible fix may help.

Ayway, start by clicking 'View configured update policies' as per your screenshot and post a screenshot of the result.

Also post a screenshot of your Update History.

Have you at any point used a utility to
    - disable telemetry or similar?
    - disable Windows Updates?

    If so, which?

Noting you also report a feature update failure, note that diagnosing those can be arduous and there are only a couple of members who sometimes spend a great deal of time and many iterative posts helping people with the more straightforward of these.

    - and you refer to Windows 7.

This suggests this is an older PC.

    Please therefore run basic checks:
    a. Check your disk e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (excellent) - result righ on its GUI. Informative.
    b. If ok, from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    c. If ok, similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

    Advise whether these pass.

    Long note .. sorry ..

Thanks to both AndreTen and dalchina for the quick replies. I have to warn you though, and hope you can hang in there with me. Several years ago I had a massive stroke which has really compromised my "brain power". Has to do with the area of my brain that handles cognitive things and my ability to understand and explain myself. Been working on it now for a few years. I'm a retired computer repair shop owner (had to sell the business due to a lot of health issues about 12 years ago) Business still going strong today after I started it back in the late 70's. But I've since moved away and am no longer in contact with it.

Yes I'm probably the oldest actual computer GEEK you've ever met. <grin> But the stroke forced me out of that business and recently the effects of that stroke has taken it's toll on my mental abilities. Still got decades of computer knowledge floating around somewhere in my ancient brain, but a LOT of it is really hard to find, and sometimes impossible for me to access. I used to repair computers and program in C, basic, pascal, some assembly etc. But I now have trouble remembering the difference between a bit and a byte. So please hang in there with me. I'll try my best to answer your questions. I apologize in advance if I'm not exactly clear or unable to remember some things that were common place to me years ago. Hope you understand. (used to be the guy who was helping others but now I need the help) Kinda sad to me but I'm dealing with it.

Here is a synopsis of how I got to this issue that may answer some questions.

I built the PC in question about 5 years ago just prior to my having the stroke. I have many PCs here and all are working fine except this one unit. Right now I have 5, two are commercial units from Dell (a hybrid notebook/tablet thing and a small desktop my wife uses) the other 3 are a home built rack mounted Windows 10 Pro I use in my Ham Radio station. Also a custom designed small low powered HTPC that has been running 24/7 now for 6 years. It has 3 tuners and sorta like a TIVO on steroids.

Lastly is the "problem" pc which is another home built fancy thing I designed to handle multimedia graphics for my photography hobby as well as video editing and processing (currently doing a lot of 4k video work and some cad cam stuff (schematic layout and chassis design work).

The video editing pc is the one with the problems.

It was built about 6 years ago. At the time it was pretty high end.

Asus Sabre Tooth Fatality Main board (UEFI BIOS).
AMD FX 8 core proc (running over 4 Ghz normally) When doing certain video intensive processing I run it at higher speeds
Dual SLI video cards with 4 GB video RAM
SSD Samsung drives about a TB of storage.
    1,000 watt power supply.
Both processor and video cards are water cooled. CPU typically runs at around 12 degrees C or 55 Deg. F. Always about 20 degrees below ambient room temp.
Case and hardware custom designed for optimum air flow and water cooling with video processing in mind.

Boots up in about 2 to 3 seconds. Originally I had four 10,000 RPM SCSI drives in a raid 0 config, But soon after first building it, I went to all separate SSD drives (no raid).

When first built it was a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit system. After a few months I upgraded the win 7 op system to a Win 10 Pro 64-bit system. Both OS's were retail installs, not OEM.

System was off line and in storage for a couple years while I was in the hospital and rehabbing. Then about 6 months ago after I finally got to the point where I could at least walk, talk and understand stuff, (sorta) I started playing with the thing.

And that is when I found it wasn't updating windows any more. Now I'm pretty sure it was working perfectly when I put it in storage 2 years ago. Then about six months ago I was using it (and not having ANY problems) that I knew of is when I happen to look at my "Windows Reliability History" and saw a lot of errors were happening almost daily.

BUT none of the errors ever affected the operation of the PC. The history showed a lot of crashes that were happening at start up. And what was happening was Windows 10 would do it's automated reboot and recover quickly and reboot again normally. The pc was so fast I never noticed that it was taking a couple extra seconds to reboot and I had it set to automatically start up and log me on without needing any password etc.

If I had not looked at the history report I would have not even known there were daily problems. And just about ALL errors were confined to the first boot of the day and then it would work perfectly all day and even if I did a shut down and then restarted it later no errors would occur. The history was showing 90 percent of the errors were happening on that first boot of the day. And all throughout any day, it seems like there was never any kind of automatic windows system op system update going on. BUT the various anti malware and anti virus stuff (like windows defender for one) were all doing their auto updates normally.

So it looks like this thing has not has a windows update working since I first turn it back on six months ago ??

I've been putzing with it to the best of my now limited ability .. But realize I do not remember enough of the technical details to be able to fix this myself.

Hope you guys can help me and thanks for the help. I believe this current configuration is Windows 11 ready. BUT I would like to upgrade the main board to something more modern, along with something like a newer Rysen 7 or better class CPU. (I'm a AMD guy at heart sorry) <grin> I was all set to try the upgrade to 11 and of course was checking out things first when I found this problem. So I'd like to first get this Win 10 system in proper working order. I will address dalchina's questions in a new reply after I look for answers to those questions. I'll try to be brief in the future and more about the technical aspect in the future. <grin>
