Win Update: Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later.

    Hi all.

On windows 10 21H2 home here.

I've been having some issues installing the xbox app recently (as seen here. )

I'm beginning to think it's to do with windows update. So, I opened Settings and found this error when going to Update + Security (I've left it a day, restarted, changed registry and used a third party tool to block updates + use services.msc to do the same)

    I hope you can help

Hi, start by removing any blocks on WU you've created.

If you used a 3rd party tool, it should have a means to reverse that change.

If you have a System Restore point created before making these changes, consider using that.

Note that tenforums members endlessly advise the routine and regular use of disk imaging so you can get back to a previous good state without technical help or delays in many cases e.g. Macrium Reflect (free).

    Hello James,

If you haven't already, you could see if resetting Windows Update using the method in the tutorial below may fix it.

    Hi, @dalchina and @Brink

Good point. I'm very risky when it comes to backing up so your words have tipped me over the edge on downloading Macrium Reflect. Thanks

In that case, you could try doing a repair install of Windows 10 below to fix it.

Have you looked at the 3rd party tool (which is it?) and tried to reverse the changes you made?

That's the first thing to do, if you don't have a suitable restore point created before using it.

You can then try Tweaking.com's free repair tool, following its instructions, and choose only the Windows Update repair.

And of course, as Brink advises, you can try an in-place upgrade repair install.

Yes looked at the third party tool uninstalled it after disabling it - StopUpdate10 is the program.

Created a restore point. Please explain how I install tweaking.com tool, I see many downloads on their website.

    Thank you for your reply.

Please confirm you re-enabled WU using this tool, and reversed the other changes you made manually.
You can of course first run the Windows Update troubleshooter, in the hope it may help.

Downloading from an alternative site may make this easier for you. Majorgeeks is well known.

@dalchina that wasn't the most pleasant site but I managed to download it in the end.. It installed OK.

A couple of things I'm eyeing in the application.

Again, thank you for your reply.

Had you used the MajorGeeks site I gave you per your request, the download should have been fairly easy.

If you don't like that either, then for your future reference, Softpedia.com is another reliable host site for many good programs.

And of course, if you don't like those, you can use Google to find more download options.

When I've suggested this program in other threads, people typically haven't had difficulty running it.

    First boot to Safe Mode.
    Then run the program.
    Then work through options

    Getting started/1/2/3/4

    - these are sensible steps and basic checks.
    - if you are sufficiently confident, you can skip 1 or more.

Then Backup Tools - if you wish e.g. to create a Restore Point.
Then Repairs Main, Open Repairs - and select only the repair you want. (Windows Update).

Have you considered reading the Help file?
