    Then please proceed with an in-place repair install as previously advised, which keeps all progs and data.

    When in effect hacking O/S system features you should always take due preparations and ensure these are reversible.

    Now's the time to create a new disk image before something else goes wrong. Endlessly recommended here - e.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid).
