    Killl Automatic Win10 Pro Updates

I disabled automatic updates thru Group Policy editor>Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > Windows Component > Windows Update >“Configure Automatic Update“> “Edit Policy Settings”>“Disabled” I continued to receive random automatic updates so I found that Services wuauserv “triggers” might be causing this so I deleted all the triggers. Worked great! The issue that remains is when I do my routine manual updates it resets the triggers and I again start receiving auto updates and again must delete the triggers. I have tried other recommendations but nothing seems totally kill Win 10 auto updates. Is there a better way to resolve this issue?

Hi, this topic has been repeatedly addressed.

Sledgehammer (free) is very effective. I have one PC on 1903. No issues. Older solution.

    More recent than that are:
Using CMD script and VBScript to control Windows Update

(which Win10tweaker has now commented on below)

Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

    - which can be found by searching the Tutorial section.

Do have a look at that- it's huge.

In addition- to consider- you can
    - set updates to Notify in Group Policy
    - set target feature version:
How to Specify Target Feature Update Version in Windows 10
    - defer feature updates for up to 365 days in Group Policy

    Hi anaron

I've tried various methods to control Windows updates over the years and have never been completely satisfied until I started using Matthew Wai's solution,

    www.tenforums.com/tutorial-submissions/148203-using-cmd-script-vbscript-control-windows-update.html

It's very easy to use by following the instructions. Also, Matthew is very responsive to any difficulties posted in the tutorial thread.

Since sometime in 2020, I have used this for 3 PC's at home and at an elderly clients PC I maintain.

Last September I upgraded my primary PC from Home to Pro and just could not see the point in messing about with Windows Update using Group Policy settings when it functions perfectly to my satisfaction thanks to Matthew's solution.

dalchina, my apologies for not being more clear on the issue and for totally missing an important diagnosis step! I have already done both Option 2 and Option 3 of Shawn's tutorial in addition to deleting the Windows Update triggers. Those actions totally kill automatic updates. However, I just discovered if I reboot the computer or manually check for updates, new triggers are registered, the Windows Update service changes from Manual to Manual (Trigger Start) and Service status from Stopped to Running! What would possibly be resetting the update settings?

dalchina & W10 Tweaker, will look into Matthew Wai's solution.

I would rather you not suggest Sledgehammer - we had an activation issue before which could have been prevented w/o the use of that program.

And was that so after all restrictions imposed by Sledgehammer had been removed?

I see nothing wrong in stating what I use. Nor did I recommend it, merely state what I'm doing.

I then went on to point out newer solutions.

Use it only after Windows has been activated. Assuming unactivated Windows will not be updated automatically, there is no need to control Windows Update before activation.

Both of the above links go to page 25.
The following link goes to the first post on the first page.

PS; the link above doesn't point at the first page of the thread for some reason
The reason is that the URL ends in "-25.html". See below:

Matthew it makes no difference - digital licences are renewed at regular intervals after initial activation - it's not permanent.

It's a Store licence at the end of the day.

Sledgehammer will disable the "Windows Update" service. The renewal will be affected if Windows Update is involved.
