Can one tune Windows Update to download updates on demand?

The title says it: I would like to be able to force Windows Update to download available updates now (as opposed to when the machine is idle or whatever other criteria may be used) in order to avoid situations where the download sits at 0% for hours.

The time on the screen shot is about an hour ago, which slowly starts to bother me.

At the same time, Windows Update seems to disagree with the ESET internet security. The latter claims there is a critical update available and bugs me to get it for more than a week already, but Windows Update fails to find it.

I know Windows Update is mostly automated, but I know it's possible to stop it at all. now the question is, is it possible to run it "on demand", namely either finding specific updates or forcing it to download updates it already found?

    1. You can manually download most updates at any time you wish e.g. using the download links provided in the tenforums News article per update, else from a MS site.

    2. If there is a problem with the MS servers, then you can't 'force' anything.

    3. Obviously you can manually check for updates. As you know, only available updates for your machine will be listed.

    4. If you wish to check for and only download 1 of a number of availaable updates, you can use one of the free third party tools such as Wumgr or Wumt which allow checkbox selection.
