Oh, that's a real bummer. I think it should be illegal to sell Windows 10/11 PCs with HDD boot drives without first making people sign a waiver.

Maybe that's a good idea. It's useful to the consumer but it's sure not practical given the current global economy with its globalisation. But you have to consider that there's a worldwide electronics shortage, including laptops, hard disk drives, solid state drives, headphones, speakers, processors and graphics cards. You could say that coronavirus shutting down the aviation and ferry industry is a factor but it's not the only factor.

Recently the inventor of BitTorrent, Brad Cohen, created a get rich quick scheme by creating a cryptocurrency where the mining is done on hard drives instead of graphics cards and processors. If you go to the Chia wikipedia article if you scroll down to the bottom to the references section, you'll see loads of hyperlinks to news articles about the hard drive shortage, particularly driven from chinese buyers. I think we all know why!

Now when I go to Amazon, and look up my preferred brand, Buffalo, and it have 1TB capacity, on the search results I see only 2 hard drives listed.

    1. In stock but it has to be imported from america and pay import tax that's not included in the visible price to get it past the airport. It costs £150. It's the only one left.
    2. An item with only 8 left in stock and it costs £180

So whereas years ago I could buy one whenever for £60, now Amazon only has 9 for sale for £180 in a country with a population of 66 million.

Also the backup service I use Backblaze had to increase their prices twice in 18 months due to the hard drive shortage.

By the way I would never get Seagate as their build quality is poor. When I was unfortunate to have a HP laptop that used a Seagate hard drive, it broke down every 9 months. My mum ignorantly brought a Seagate hard drive and it broke within the first 30 minutes of use despite having zero files on it. The person who runs Stop Forum Spam agrees as he said on twitter that Seagate hard drives are rubbish.

I tried using the Windows Update logs in powershell using Get-WindowsUpdateLog and it wasn't helpful.

Then I opened up c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log in Sublime Text with the Filter Lines plugin then I would exclude any lines that doesn't include ", Info".
I then found the cause of the error, that the servicing stack was outdated and the windows update required a newer servicing stack.
I don't have the exact error message as windows has deleted the windows.old folder from my computer.

    I’ve found the relevant CBS.log
I forgot that I saved the file online

CBS.log November 2021 excluding the boring "info" lines ($2210539) . Snippets . Snippets . GitLab

Package "Package_for_KB5008295~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~22000.318.1.1" requires Servicing Stack v10.0.22000.190 but current Servicing Stack is v10.0.19041.1310.

KB5008295 is an Update for Windows 11.
The installation can and should not work on Windows 10.
