Not what you asked for but how about controlling updates and allowing those you care to have while hiding others?

I use this solution on 3 PCs.

This question has been asked many many times. Have you tried searching tenforums, or searching the Tutorials section?

There are two tenforums tutorials one using a vbs script, another methods including a 3rd party tool.
Using CMD script and VBScript to control Windows Update
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

Then there have been for years these free tools:

    WUMT Windows Update Minitool

    Thanks for the answers.

I've never really felt the need to limit or shut down updates. Still don't (knock on wood), but at least one game I play can be virtually ruined by updates.

I was just looking for a quick link or two to get an overview of what was required--I had some odd idea that there might be a built-in manager of some sort.

If you only require the updates not to interrupt the game you mention, then simply pause updates for the period you are gaming
settings - updates - pause 7 days or advanced options below and choose pause period

Thank you for the thought. I am not sure that it is the update process itself that is bugging the game or the version of windows that is installed/updated/changed which is the problem. The reports I'm seeing suggest that rolling back the update or restoring windows fixes the problem.

    I misunderstood
    I thought you asked
As per title--Is there a way to turn off windows updates?
I saw no mention of perceived slow performance - in the game- due to something on the system.
I thought you were saying the porblem was UPDATES downloading and/or installing.

You can also limit bandwidth used by updates - delivery optimization - advanced options

If you perceive a general lack of performance and it is ONLY in gaming - then more detail is required IF the problem is NOT solved by the update pause or limiting bandwidth
