    DISM Cleanup Image Question

    Hello all. I have an update issue where the update gets to 20%, pauses, then to 100%, then fail.

    I know why this is happening, but I want to fix it. On the MS site, it recommended using:
    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    Does anyone know what that does? Main question, will it download anything it thinks is missing from the install? I don't want it to install any new programs. When I say I know why the update fails, it's due to me not having MS Edge installed. I checked in the update download folder, there was a load of MS Edge installation files. So, no Edge, nothing to update, error. The updater usually does something, one time it installed the Win 11 compatibility checker.

    I am happy to run DISM, but don't want it to install MS Edge, or anything to be honest. There's a fair bit intentionally missing from my Win 10 install.

    Update - KBF006670
    There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x800f0831)

    Thanks all!

    Hello Sean,
    This should give you some information: Clean Up Component Store (WinSxS folder) in Windows 10

    I don't believe it downloads anything.

    EDIT:
    Just ran it successfully while disconnected from the internet - give that a whirl

    Thanks Steve, I had a look through that but I couldn't see any detail on what it did. I notice the "online" tag in the script, I was wondering if I could offline instead. I thought I would ask before trying.

    If I give it a go and I get Edge, it's a fresh install job with my custom installer. I am feeling brave, is the question.

    See my update to previous post - ran fine with no internet. /online refers to the fact that you are running dism on the currently active Windows image you booted from .

    from dism /? :
    /Online - Targets the running operating system.

    Ah, nice one. Thank you. So far so good, anyway, now to run the updater again.

    Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 10.0.19041.844

    Image Version: 10.0.19043.985

    [===== 10.0% ]
    [==========================100.0%==========================]
    The operation completed successfully.
    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>

    No dice, same result from the update. DISM didn't install anything, I had internet disconnected. So, that's my question answered.

    It's looking like the message, "Your device is missing important security and quality fixes.", should read, "If you have MS Edge Installed, Your device is missing important security and quality fixes.".

    I don't usually get any update issues.

    Uninstalling Edge breaks things I read - I just leave it installed and don't use it

    Did it misbehave on your PC?

    It is impossible to uninstall Edge, I spent 2 months trying to, this was after the times when the PS script would remove it, then they stopped. The only way to do it, I found, was make a custom installer, where I had removed some stuff from, Edge being one. Then it is never installed. Through the updates, some Edge stuff has slipped in, some DLLs here and there.

    It is correct, some things do not work. Small things for me. Mostly in settings, where there are links to the web, lots of them work and use Firefox just fine, some need Edge, and there's a message that says something about the MSEdge-Link needs an app assigned to it. I have tried to do this but have never found where that's stored. I have been able to assign mailto html links to Firefox.

    Where Settings requires Edge is usually system settings, and are only tutorials and so on. But usually settings where system info is required, and from my experience and research, Edge has far more access to your system than you would ever want.

    I use Releases . da2x/EdgeDeflector . GitHub so even settings links will open with my chosen browser and not Edge

    Just follow EdgeDeflector/README.md at master . da2x/EdgeDeflector . GitHub

    That's cool. It works, but it doesn't work. There's some Microsoft trickery somewhere with some of those settings links.

    Give me an example of a settings link that doesn't work/open in your desired browser.
