Sept and Oct Cumulative updates will not install

Personally, I'd try a Repair install, which is not as drastic as its name suggests.
- The only side effects are that you'll have to repeat the latest CU [which you intend to do anyway] and probably some small updates such as .Net ones.
- I always create a new system image & backup my own files before trying even though I is a very reliable procedure.

I can see that you have already started to refer to tutorials but thought these few notes might still be of use to you.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.

- At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
- I download a new copy each month.
- By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.

- Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
- Both tutorial lists are searchable.
- You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums

If you search tenforums for your error number I think you will find other such threads where I and others have, as Try3 recommended, advised an in-place upgrade repair install.

It seems frustrating to have to do that- there will, somehow, be a specific way of fixing the problem, but identifying that, on top of the effort you've put in, will take much longe and prove more difficult and uncertain than taking the expedient route.

- that's higher than
19042.662

Further, you should be able to see your installed updates in Update History or Control Panel, Programs and Features....

Is KB4586853 only required if you have 20H2 build 19042.662 ?

You can run the Repair install procedure.

You are beyond the dodgy early 20H2 builds so you don't need to care but
- the reason for that warning was that there was a fault in early builds of Version 20H2 that affected running Repair installs, and
- the CU, KB4586853 which raised the build number to .662, fixed that fault, so
- those, such as you, with builds at or above .662 are able to run Repair installs in the manner we are all used to [retaining existing files & installed applications].

You do not need to run the CU KB4586853 because you are beyond it. You only ever need to run the latest CU.
- Cumulative Updates [CUs] were introduced to avoid the endless downloading & installation of a myriad of small updates.
- CUs contain all the changes in the current Version that were in earlier CUs which is why you only ever need the latest one.

- - If, like me and several others, you download CUs from the MSUpdateCatalog [possibly using the direct link given in the CU's dedicated page in TenForums News] then when you install the CU, it checks what you have already got and skips those bits to save time. Similarly, if you tried to install a CU for a second time, it would detect that you had the whole thing and tell you to bog off.
- - WU is slightly cleverer. If you use WU for your updates it will check your computer & the CU and only bother to download the bits of the CU you need so saving even more time.

Hello @Tranas,

Just for information, you ONLY ever need to install the LATEST Cumulative Update, as that includes ALL the previous ones. You can find which is the latest, and if there are known problems with it, by visiting the Windows 10 News Forum. I just did a search on Cumulative Update within the Windows 10 News Forum for the LAST month . . .
