Sept and Oct Cumulative updates will not install

Win10Pro 20H2 build 19042.1165 - neither KB5005565 or KB5006670 will install. KB4023057 installs without issues. After download and restart, either of the cumulative updates reach 97-100% and then fail - changes are undone (except Edge - LOL). Downloading the updates and installing offline gets the same result. 0x800f0922 shown as the error code for the failed install. chkdsk has been run. sfc /scannow found no issues. dism.exe completed successfully. Brink's Reset Windows Update procedure .bat file has been run. No joy. The updates continue to fail. Rolling the box back to an clean earlier Macrium image and trying the install also fails. Any suggestions other than 'reinstall Windows' ??

Personally, I'd try a Repair install, which is not as drastic as its name suggests.
    - The only side effects are that you'll have to repeat the latest CU [which you intend to do anyway] and probably some small updates such as .Net ones.
    - I always create a new system image & backup my own files before trying even though I is a very reliable procedure.

If you use the latest ISO for the Repair install [which you do not have to] you will also achieve an update to the latest published Version.

    Welcome to TenForums.

I can see that you have already started to refer to tutorials but thought these few notes might still be of use to you.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

If you search tenforums for your error number I think you will find other such threads where I and others have, as Try3 recommended, advised an in-place upgrade repair install.

It seems frustrating to have to do that- there will, somehow, be a specific way of fixing the problem, but identifying that, on top of the effort you've put in, will take much longe and prove more difficult and uncertain than taking the expedient route.

Thanks for the responses, but when I go to the tutorials, some instructions are not clear - such as:

".....If you have Windows 10 version 20H2 installed, then it is required to have KB4586853 for build 19042.662 or higher installed to be able to do a repair install and keep everything.
This does not apply to you if you have a higher version or build installed."

Is KB4586853 only required if you have 20H2 build 19042.662 ?

    TIA

    You said you have
    19042.1165
    - that's higher than
    19042.662

Further, you should be able to see your installed updates in Update History or Control Panel, Programs and Features....

You can run the Repair install procedure.

You are beyond the dodgy early 20H2 builds so you don't need to care but
    - the reason for that warning was that there was a fault in early builds of Version 20H2 that affected running Repair installs, and
    - the CU, KB4586853 which raised the build number to .662, fixed that fault, so
    - those, such as you, with builds at or above .662 are able to run Repair installs in the manner we are all used to [retaining existing files & installed applications].

You do not need to run the CU KB4586853 because you are beyond it. You only ever need to run the latest CU.
    - Cumulative Updates [CUs] were introduced to avoid the endless downloading & installation of a myriad of small updates.
    - CUs contain all the changes in the current Version that were in earlier CUs which is why you only ever need the latest one.
    - - If, like me and several others, you download CUs from the MSUpdateCatalog [possibly using the direct link given in the CU's dedicated page in TenForums News] then when you install the CU, it checks what you have already got and skips those bits to save time. Similarly, if you tried to install a CU for a second time, it would detect that you had the whole thing and tell you to bog off.
    - - WU is slightly cleverer. If you use WU for your updates it will check your computer & the CU and only bother to download the bits of the CU you need so saving even more time.

I may be wrong, but to me it sounds like you've uninstalled the Edge Browser.

The article talks about the update KB5003173 but that doesn't matter.

Correct. ..... setup --uninstall --force-uninstall --system-level. Other boxes with Edge uninstalled the same way - update normally. This may be because of a difference in the Edge installer version - 8* vs 9*. If this was the cause of the issue - would be a typical M$ move.

In any event, an In-place Upgrade to 21H1 allowed the CU to install on two boxes which exhibited the same behavior. The fact that a cumulative update takes hours to install - above and beyond the in-place upgrade - is outrageous.

...and yes - Edge has been stripped out of all boxes with 21H1. Appreciate the help and information from all involved.

    Hello @Tranas,

Just for information, you ONLY ever need to install the LATEST Cumulative Update, as that includes ALL the previous ones. You can find which is the latest, and if there are known problems with it, by visiting the Windows 10 News Forum. I just did a search on Cumulative Update within the Windows 10 News Forum for the LAST month . . .

    > Type: Posts; Keyword(s): cumulative, updates; Date is After 23 Sep 2021; Forum = Windows 10 News and child forums

    I hope this helps.

Try3 already posted that in #6. Fact is, it makes no difference if there is a problem with the CU - because the workaround is always the same - reinstall windows. Windows95 Déjà vu
