Windows update error-0x800f0988 while installing update KB5006670

I have Windows 10 Home Single Language - 21H1 (19043.1237) and I'm struggling with installation of the update '2021-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64-based Systems (KB5006670)'
I get the error code 0x800f0988.


I also downloaded this package separately and tried installing it but got this error.



I searched for this error on this forum and followed the cmd admin commands plus additional instructions from this post

I also ran the bat file available here and followed all the instructions.

I still get the same issue.

Okay. I read the steps here and did methods 1 and 2 which didn't solve the issue. Page not found • Windows Report - Error-free Tech Life I did method 3 and same result. Sharing the screenshot of log of cmd prompt.



Then I did an in-place upgrade and after the reboot, I got this.


I'm still not able to install the update. I also went to deskmodder.de but couldn't find the script for the specific update that I'm facing issues with.

This is the fix from the deskmodder website along with the update.

Unzip the package and then run the Batch Fix.cmd with a right click as administrator.

Please let me know whether the update could be installed or not.

That an in-place upgrade repair has failed could well suggest a serious or difficult to resolve problem.
Given that, you are wasting your time still trying to install the update.

Please get a copy of setupdiag.exe (free) - see above- run that, post the output (should be short).

What security software are you using? Sometimes problems occur when particular 3rd party security programs are used.

Basics:
- check your disk - Hard Disk Sentinel (excellent) - portable version available
- if ok, run
chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command prompt.
Advise if it passes - don't post the whole thing.

I have screen OCR'd your error report for you for search purposes:
0x800F0830 - 0x20003 The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_UPDATES operation

Feel free to use that to search for further ideas.

Note this in particular:
The failure occurs during an update where OS is not able to migrate the driver as it causes illegal operation. It results in a rollback of the operating system. This is a SafeOS boot failure, typically caused by drivers or non-Microsoft disk encryption software. During the SafeOS phase, the system verifies that everything, including drivers, is behaving as they are expected. Any operation which is not secure or signatures are missing will cause an issue when it comes to system stability.

Okay now I switched off the developer mode and restarted my laptop. After that I ran the troubleshooter and it fixed something. Here's the screenshot.




After that I ran the update using windows update, same error. Then I ran the setupdiag.exe

After that I ran the FixWU tool. Got a success message after running it. Then I ran update via the downloaded package. Same error like shown in the original post.

I'm using Eset Internet Security. I turned it off and ran all the update operations.

Setup log files are two. One is from WinRE agent folder and the other one is from DPX folder.

Just realized while making this post that I didn't run chkdsk and Hard Disk Sentinel. Really sorry! I'll run those too and share updates.

Thank you for sharing this. I downloaded and extracted this package. I ran the batchfix cmd as admin. The process ran for a while with a long log list. I followed the instructions for pressing keys to continue. The update was failing unfortunately. Here's the dism log file generated.

Open the Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\logs and then copy and paste the CBS folder on your desktop, zip it and then upload it on WeTransfer - Send Large Files & Share Photos Online - Up to 2GB Free.

Copy the entire CBS folder on the desktop and do not delete any files from the folder.

- seems to point to the need to check your disk.
Turning it off is not at all the same as uninstalling it, as during an upgrade applications are transferred to the new build.
I also note your original error message refers to updates.
You can elect NOT to receive updates as part of the upgrade process- or even disconnect the internet. If there are no basic underlying issues this simplifies the procedure and reduces risk of failure.

Okay I ran chkdsk c: /scan from an admin command prompt.
It found no issues.

Haven't uninstalled my antivirus yet as I've done lot of customization, made scanning and firewall rules inside it. I'll have to export settings very carefully.
