A Preview update installed without my initiating it

I never install 'preview' type updates so I was surprised this morning when a message showed that my computer needed to restart to finish installing a preview update, KB5005539, for .NET Framework. I had no choice at this stage but to allow it to complete the install but I am baffled as to how it happened. I thought preview type updates did not install automatically and had to be initiated by the user but I did not open the Settings\Update & Security then click on 'Check for updates'.

Has anyone else had a preview update 'pushed' on their computers without permission?

    Thanks.

As you have PRO you can use a group policy in addition to those you currently have applied to prevent preview updates being applied (assuming you've not already done that) - I have.

I set an appropriate policy and haven't had one since. It may have been this one:

Yep, there is no reason to install update previews.

Start using Windows Automatic Update Manager

    Thanks guys.

Using Local Group Policy editor I changed "Manage Preview Builds' to 'disabled' and also changed Windows Update to "Notify for download and auto install".

Hopefully it won't happen again but I will report back if it does.

Personally I paused the Windows Update on my computer to prevent automatically downloading and installing preview updates

That's just a delay. What's needed is the 'off' switch- permanently.

If you look at my photo in post #1 you will see another 'Preview' type update KB5005611 waiting for me to install should I wish to but this is 'Optional' and did not get 'pushed' onto my computer. So there were two updates, both 'Preview' types, but one gets 'pushed' and the other doesn't. I thought all 'preview' updates were optional and should never get pushed. Weird.

    Watch this space.

The term 'preview' is misleading. It's a way for MS to get feedback on their updates- kind of an inflicted Insider channel for ordinary users...

Preview does not equal optional. They are different.
