I don't have Comodo Internet Security or any third party antivirus installed any more. I also don't have any third party firewall running either. I'm just using Windows Defender Antivirus and Windows Defender Firewall.
If that is the case would you kindly amend you computer spec - it helps members when trying to assist you
    From your spec
    Antivirus: Comodo Internet Security

The setupdiag indicated a successful upgrade to 20H1.

It did not indicate a successful or failed upgrade to 20H2 or 21H1.
I think the feature update history for Windows 10 on my laptop pretty much went something like this.

    1. 1808
    2. 1909
    3. 20H2
    4. 21H1

Microsoft says that Windows 10, versions 2004, 20H2, and 21H1 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files according to this web page about upgrading to 21H1. But 1808 and 1909 doesn't so maybe that caused discrepancies with my windows installation.

I remember one feature update taking 32 hours to complete on the coloured boot screen saying "Configuring windows updates. Do not turn off your computer."

    • Some installed Windows Update appear in the Uninstall Updates page in Control Panel, but not in the View Update History in Settings. See this thread for details. I forgot to post it on Ten Forums probably because I had more pressing faults with my computer to deal with at the time.
    • The relevant registry keys regarding my previous feature updates for Windows 10, they don't exist (see image below)
    • The feature history does not appear in the View Updates History of Windows Update in the Settings program (see image below)

When I upgraded to 20H2 the feature update was visible in "view update history" in the windows update section of the settings program but all the previous feature updates was not there.

Then when I upgraded to Windows 10 21H1 the feature update section on that page became empty.

The BIOS is out of date.

    Upgrade the BIOS: 1.2 > 1.22

    Product Support | Acer Canada

    After upgrading the BIOS:

Uninstall any of these non-Microsoft software:
    a) antivirus
    b) firewall
    c) drive encryption
    Okay I'll do that.

Do you think it would be a good idea to attempt to use Windows Update to install the continuous windows update that keeps trying to re-install itself, along with all the other windows updates, while my computer is running on a clean boot?

I have a recovery partition on my computer.

Should I use the Reset this pc option from my current windows installation or should I use the .iso file from the Microsoft website?

My version of windows is an OEM version so it came pre-installed with various drivers, software and power plan settings specific to my computer manufacturer. If I use the .iso file from the Microsoft website then I'll lose all that OEM installation in favour of a retail installation, and I might then be hindered as I'll be lacking various drivers.

See if you can perform an in place upgrade repair in clean boot using a brand new Windows 10 iso 21H1.

The iso can be downloaded to the desktop or to a flash drive.

If it works then the above problems should be fixed.

If it fails then run setupdiag and post a share link into this thread.

    There are two recovery partitions.

The first one should be orphaned.

A reset save files if performed will require the reinstallation of drivers and applications.

I tried your instructions and it works now. Thank you lot for your help. I don't think "in-place repair" existed in Windows 8.

The reason why I was reluctant to carry it out is because I'm a power user, not a casual user. I mean, I don't just use my laptop like most people to just use the Alexa Top 1000 websites, use netflix, facebook, gmail, microsoft office and not much else. I have lots of software, drivers, services installed and windows settings changed. So the more factors I introduce to my computer, the higher the chance that something can go wrong, with that the problems faced being more rare and more complex. Higher factors means more uncertainty.

For setupdiag you can find the relevant build number here or maybe even here.

    Update

I had to reinstall some drivers

    • Realtek Audio Driver (2021 version from Driver Fix, the one on the Acer website is outdated and buggy) Update: Also choose the driver from Driver Booster. Remember to reinstall any USB sound card drivers after updating the audio drivers.
    • Soundtap by NCH Software
    • Debut by NCH Software
    • Intel Integrated UMA (Unified Memory Architecture) Graphics Card Driver. UMA is what Intel calls an intregated graphics card (from the acer website according to my laptop) (VGA_Intel_27.20.100.8280_W10x64_(UMA))
    • Intel Management Engine (from Driver Fix) (nb-driver-64bit-win10-dchu-me-2108.100.0.1053)
    • Synaptics Touchpad driver along with the Intel Serial IO driver which must be installed before installing the touchpad driver (from the acer website according to my laptop) (IO Drivers_Intel_30.100.1916.1_W10x64_A) (TouchPad_Synaptics_19.0.25.10_W10x64_A)

    That's great news.

Please make free backup images and save the images to another disk drive or the cloud:

I use Backblaze to backup my laptop and hard drive online for $7 a month excluding 20% VAT.

For synchronising files between two places I use DSynchronise
