    Windows update failure 0x800f0831

    Hi All,
Windows Update is failing when installing KB5005565 with an error code of 0x800f0831. I've done a lot of digging and found out this is related to some missing/corrupt packages. Really not sure how this happened

sfc /scannow shows it did not find any integrity violations

    DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth fails with error code 0x800f081f

I have tried to provide a source and restore it with the ISO but i believe it's outdated so it doesn't work either way I can't seem to fix this. I'm on Version 10 Pro 21H1 19043.1083.

My CBS log is at the link below:

    Hello acrusco,
Try downloading and installing the KB CAB file as described in the top of the OP in KB5005565 Windows 10 2004 19041.1237, 20H2 19042.1237, 21H1 19043.1237

If that fails, do a repair install: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Thanks Steve. I tried but got Error: 0x800f0831.

I'm trying to avoid doing an in-place upgrade, is there anything else we could try?

An In-Place upgrade will fix Windows and save all your programs and files, at the same time.
It only takes about 40 minutes.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

    Thanks Ghot,

I thought that wouldn't work for me because the media creation tool ISO would be a previous version of Windows version 21H1?

I was under the assumption that you needed to install a version that's either the same as your current version or one that's newer for it to be successful.

Wouldn't the media creation tool give me version 19043.928, which is lower than 19043.1083 and therefore fail because of a "downgrade"?

Looking at your CBS.log and this https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/tro...talling-update - I'm not sure what the missing package to search for in https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/home.aspx is . If we could figure that out, maybe the in-place upgrade can be avoided.

Go here... click Create Download package, and save it to your desktop. This will create the ISO for 19043.1237

Summary for Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1 (19043.1237) amd64, English (United States), Windows Pro - UUP dump

Extract the file to your desktop, open the folder and double click: uup_download_windows.cmd
Then just sit back and watch it create the ISO image. (takes about 40 minutes. It will tell you when it's finished)

    Then, when it's finished...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

And... you will not only be up-to-date, but the Windows problem (with updates) will be fixed.

The in-place upgrade would still work because you're on 19043 and not trying to go below 19043 - the minor number doesn't matter for the purpose of doing the in-place upgrade.

May be worth trying to install this update first: KB5005033 Windows 10 2004 19041.1165, 20H2 19042.1165, 21H1 19043.1165 which is the August CU and still ahead of what's on your PC now.

Thanks! I wasn't aware the minor version did not matter.

I tried to install that patch from august as you suggested but it also failed.
