Hi, have you ever used any means to disable Windows Update?

    History: (rarely given by posters)
    -when did this start happening?
    - what changed around the time this started?

This problem was solved in this thread on tenforums:
Windows Update will not open in Settings
Try the "Restore Windows Updates" button of StopUpdates10 (which has worked for others in the same circumstances)
    and in this thread:
How to get Windows Update working again on this system ?

when the poster followed my suggestion to repair Windows Update using
Tweaking.com's free repair tool (via Google), choosing only the relevant repair.

    Otherwise: try:
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

If you search for the error message (which I've OCR'd for you) you can find many pages offering suggestions on how to fix this:
Windows Update Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later.

@dalchina None of the above worked and I tried trouble shooting and it said no problems.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I therefore suggest you perform an in-place upgrade repair an in-place upgrade repair which keeps progs and data, assuming you have not been using disk imaging routinely and regularly as is endlessly recommended here to give you a chance of recovery from difficult situations, and that System Restore is of no help.

You haven't responded to my questions about History.

Please see these on how to perform an in-place upgrade repair

About History, look at the former post which I "Updated" Doing Full Install to get rid of the Problem. I've got a Virus.

Now's the time to start a new sequence of regular and routine disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect - free/paid + large enough external storage).

Also check System Restore is enabled. A useful complement, great when it works.

Sorry to disappoint probably everyone here, I have decided to quit Windows. I'm going into Unix, if that gives you a hint to what system I will be using. Getting new computer Tuesday. Looking forward to Big Sur. LOL
