I didn't have the problem that last time I printed which was a few days ago now. The problem is that the problem started before the current cumulative update KB5010415. Was there another update before that that is causing the problem? I just installed KB5010415 and am ready to reboot the computer....Rebooting didn't change anything.

I checked HP and found a printer driver update:
HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 All-in-One series Basic Driver - IT Professional Use only
    Version: 40.15.1230
    Size: 68.8 MB
    Date: Nov 24, 2021

I removed the printer and the current printer driver and other software. I reinstalled the printer driver again. This time the setup found the printer and installed it. Note the last step in the setup was to download and install HP Smart. I canceled that because I always found HP Smart annoying and unnecessary.

Was there a Windows update that caused my printer problem or was it a coincidence?

    Ed,

You can check whether Windows update installed a new printer driver. That has been known to cause problems before.
See my post #21 in another thread

    All the best,

    Ed,

    About updates:-
KB5010415 is a CU Preview [I always thought these were optional but it looks like I might have been wrong about this]
    KB5010342 is the latest CU
KB5010472 is a Preview update to .Net framework
KB4023057 is an update to Windows update itself. It gets amended then re-released once or twice a year.
There are TenForums News threads about each of them.

To all whom it may concern, who face this printer sharing issue, including error code 0x00011b and similar

It seems Microsoft has made additional changes for the worse. Now not even these hacks work anymore.
There is no effect anymore, doesn't matter if you apply the registry patches and/or downgrade the spooler dll...

Guest/anonymous printing is effectively killed, rest in peace. The error message won't go away...

What you can do now, though, is to enable password protected sharing on the server computer, set up permissions for the printer, and use credentials to connect to the server on the client computer when adding the printer.

If you are willing to do this, then it works fine, no further workarounds needed. Still I pity Microsoft for not really documenting this, a warning message would be due to the printer sharing screen, and to the add a new printer screen too, that unless you log in as an authorized user then it will not work.

Do we have any MVPs here that can create a tutorial on this and perhaps forward this to Microsoft? I posted it on Feedback hub but haven't received an official reply...

Thanks for the update. That's going to be disappointing news to a lot of people.

I hate to be the first person to ask this, but could a tutorial be provided to walk people through this process? I realize that the steps aren't that hard, and are all googleable, but I'd rather just see it laid out nice and easy. I'd been immune from this somehow (my computers all automatically update), but now I have this problem.

Yes, you're right to ask! A tutorial would be needed. @Brink can you help us with this?
I'm happy to provide details and testing, but your tutorials are the best ,so you should word this. :)

I've always used a network printer connected to the router via Ethernet. All devices on the network are able to print without issue.

    Update:

I'd been having problems with computers accessing our printer, which is USB-connected to my home computer. All computers had been able to print to it at one time, and then stopped "somewhere" along the line - we don't print a lot.

The impetus for my visiting this thread was that we got our first Windows 11 computer, and all the setup and configuration went fine, but I got 0x0000011b when trying to connect to the printer. I'd been able to "see" my computer, and the connected printer from the Win11 machine network view, but got the error when trying to connect.

I tried to use @ish4d0w's guidance:
What you can do now, though, is to enable password protected sharing on the server computer, set up permissions for the printer, and use credentials to connect to the server on the client computer when adding the printer.
But when the client Win11 machine asked for credentials for the printer-hosting computer, it wouldn't accept the correct credentials that I entered (why not? - should just be the username and password used to log into that host computer, right?).

I then tried the steps in Fix: Operation failed with error 0x0000011B (Windows cannot connect to the printer)

But there were some curves that way too:
    1. The RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled registry key already existed on the host computer, and with a correct value of 0
    2. KB5007186, which is supposed to be uninstalled, didn't exist on either the client (Win11) or host (Win10) computer - there was nothing to uninstall

So in trying to figure out what to do next, I took a poke at adding the printer, and voila, it worked. Recognized, installed, driver found and installed on the Win11 machine, and it printed fine.

So I'm happy I have it working, and all I can think is that the restarting the print spooler on the host machine - the only material change I made to anything - was what got it working.
