    Not really.

I have always considered a print server to be a dedicated computer whose sole task is to host printers for all or multiple workstations on the network. In the big lab I used to work in the print server was a "turn-key" machine - you powered it on in the morning with the power switch, and powered it off at the end of the day the same way. It didn't even have a mouse or keyboard attached. It did have a monitor, but it was always turned off. If the IT guy needed to do something to it, he brought along his own mouse and keyboard.

I would simply, regard Workstation 3 as a workstation hosting a network shared computer.
Think you meant to say "network shared printer" in the last three words of post quoted.

"Workstation hosting a network shared printer" is a mouthful and IMHO it is a "printer server" as far us the standard terminology goes, according to my understanding. Print server - Wikipedia

We can of course agree to differ and not split hairs on this

You can call the host PC a print server. Most folks will understand what either means.

    @TV2 and @smartcooky,

    KB5006738 Windows 10 2004 19041.1320, 20H2 19042.1320, 21H1 19043.1320

OP states "Addresses a known issue that might prevent the successful installation of printers using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)."

    Internet Printing Protocol - Wikipedia

Do you guys have any idea if it fixes the shared printer issues you've been experiencing?

I saw that over in the NEWS forum for 6738 and wondered the same thing myself.
Short answer is I don't know.

I understood that the issue (of this thread) was in the deprecation of the Point And Print feature to address the Print Nightmare vulnerability.
Perhaps the IPP addresses the same or similar function. I guess only testing after installing 6738 will tell. I was unable to find anything tying these things together in my brief research.

You're right, it doesn't look that way.

The thing that makes this problem difficult is that it does not affect everyone's printers, only certain specific configurations. In that thread they seem to be talking about another configuration and error code.

I don't know anything about Internet Printing Protocol because I've never had occasion to use it. Probably should catch up at some point.

    From Wikipedia:

The Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) is a specialized Internet protocol for communication between client devices (computers, mobile phones, tablets, etc.) and printers (or print servers). It allows clients to submit one or more print jobs to the printer or print server, and perform tasks such as querying the status of a printer, obtaining the status of print jobs, or cancelling individual print jobs.

Like all IP-based protocols, IPP can run locally or over the Internet. Unlike other printing protocols, IPP also supports access control, authentication, and encryption, making it a much more capable and secure printing mechanism than older ones.

IPP is the basis of several printer logo certification programs including AirPrint, IPP Everywhere,[1] and Mopria Alliance, and is supported by over 98% of printers sold today.[2]

This is the problem with owning old printers. I fall in that 2% range!

Connections to printers shared via print server might encounter errors

    Fresh acknowledgement from Microsoft

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...h1#2737msgdesc

After installation of KB5006670, Windows print clients might encounter the following errors when connecting to a remote printer shared on a Windows print server:

    0x000006e4 (RPC_S_CANNOT_SUPPORT)
    0x0000007c (ERROR_INVALID_LEVEL)
    0x00000709 (ERROR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME)

Note: The printer connection issues described in this issue are specific to print servers and are not commonly observed in devices designed for home use. Printing environments affected by this issue are more commonly found in enterprises and organizations.

Finally, they start using specific keywords "shared" and "print servers" instead of just generic "network printing".

    Yes, agreed.
Unfortunately, they don't seem to understand that this IS happening in devices designed for home use (standard home-office style printers). So it could be a while before they get to folks like me.
