Found A Solution That Worked For Me

I found a registry patch that worked for me on my Windows 10 Pro PC.

Patch Tuesday was a bit rough this week : sysadmin

If you haven't rolled back the server update, try setting:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled

(DWORD) to 0 on the server and restart the spooler (or the server). This key's behavior defaulted to 0 prior to the September updates, but now it defaults to 1 (Enforcement). If your clients are up to date (patched since January 2021), they aren't supposed to see these errors. EOL clients like Windows 7 (without ESU) would be expected to get errors.

    More info here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...7-7201623a8b25

Setting that key to 0 reduces security, but if it works it would let you keep the patch installed (and uninstalling the patch effectively sets it to 0 unless manually added).

This only needs to be done on the PC where the printers are connected (print server/host). After adding this registry patch I was able to again print over the network from my laptop (client) PC. KB5005565 is still installed on both PCs. After adding the registry key, restart the PC and then test printing from both the print server/host and client PCs.

    Excellent!
I will give that a try at my next opportunity. I suppose I will need to reinstall KB5005565 on my host machine first.

Yup, you will. Remember to restart the PC after adding the registry key, then test printing.

    I have four computers
    #1 Desktop with Windows 10 21H1 (Ethernet)
    #2 Desktop with Windows 10 21H1 (Ethernet)
    #3 Laptop with Windows 10 21H1 (WiFi)
#4 Laptop with Windows 7 (WiFi)
Note all the computers with Windows 10 have the KB5005565 update.

Printer: HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 (WiFi)

All the computers could print and scan fine except #1.
Note all the computers have the latest HP Basic Printer Driver installed

    On computer #1:
If I tried to print or scan a box popped up insisting that I install the printer first
It seemed to install OK but ended with insisting that I install the HP Smart app
I installed the HP Smart app. But then I remembered why I never installed it before.
It wouldn't let me print or scan unless I logged into the HP website. What a bunch of garbage.
I uninstalled the HP Smart app and the HP Basic Driver
I reinstalled the Basic Driver but got the same result.

Note the installation was strange in that it couldn't find the printer when it scanned the network for it. I had to manually enter the IP address but still that didn't end with a successful installation.

I finally relented and did the following
    • Uninstalled the HP Basic Driver
    • Uninstalled the KB5005565 update and rebooted
    • I reinstalled the HP Basic Driver

This time the printer driver installed like normal with the computer now able to print and scan again.

That's unusual MisterEd. Others with WiFi printers did not report any problems.
Did you try the RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled registry fix that nikki605 posted above?

No. I may consider that at some point but right now printing is working OK. Thanks for your response.

I reinstalled the KB5005565 update and applied theRpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled =0 fix. I had to add manually on my PC because it wasn't present. Rebooted the PC after the update was reinstalled then checked that the registry value was still =0 which it was so the update did not change the value. My printing capability is back to normal now. I only had to apply the registry fix to the PC that has the printer attached via USB cable. My other PC's were all up to date with the KB5005565 already installed.

You and I took exactly the same steps with exactly the same result. Glad it worked for you.

Thanks for the tip. I had uninstalled the update and paused my updates until somebody could find a solution.
