From what I have gathered so far:
The issue is in the Windows "Point And Print" capability.
Microsoft found a security vulnerability in Point And Print and have closed that in this last security update.
Point And Print allows a user on a Windows 2000 and later client to create a connection to a remote printer without providing disks or other installation media. All necessary files and configuration information are automatically downloaded from the print server to the client. Point and Print technology provides two methods by which you can specify files that should be sent from the print server to the client machine:
- Files can be associated with a printer driver. These files are associated with every print queue that uses the driver.
- Files can be associated with individual print queues.
Obviously I have my remote PCs set up to the printers on my main PC using the Point And Print method.
This method, it seems, has been deprecated.
I'm curious if the folks that have KB5005565 installed and have no remote printer issues have installed the printer drivers and/or the printer software on each of their remote PCs.
Perhaps that is the fix.

And this is the summary from the article I posted earlier describing the behavior after KB5005565:
Summary
Windows updates released August 10, 2021 and later will, by default, require administrative privilege to install drivers. We made this change in default behavior to address the risk in all Windows devices, including devices that do not use Point and Print or print functionality. For more information, see Point and Print Default Behavior Change and CVE-2021-34481.
By default, non-administrator users will no longer be able to do the following using Point and Print without an elevation of privilege to administrator:
- Install new printers using drivers on a remote computer or server
- Update existing printer drivers using drivers from remote computer or server
Note If you are not using Point and Print, you should not be affected by this change and will be protected by default after installing updates released August 10, 2021 or later.
