I also found this to be a very good reference in understanding printing components and terminology:

    Windows Printing Components – ITFreeTraining

I like the diagrams in the PDF and video.

I suspect these shared printing issues discussed in the last two monthly KBs also apply to Network-Attached Printer Sharing, not just Locally Attached Printer Sharing.

I don't know about that. We have had no end of trouble with USB printers on computers shared with Windows (KB5005565 and KB5006670), but two other printers plugged directly into the network with Ethernet cables, and another printer connected via WiFi has given us no problems at all.

That's interesting. Thanks for the update.

I posted the problem with 5565 over in the News Forum for the update. Many people reported they had no problems printing with that update. Digging a little revealed that they were all on either wireless networked printers or Ethernet networked printers.
None of the people that did not have problems were using USB connected printers over a network.

Do you have a link to that thread/post?

Do PCs print directly to the two printers that are Ethernet attached and the WiFi printer - i.e. no printer server involved - or is Network-Attached Printer Sharing in effect?

    Yes.

The two printers plugged directly into the network with Ethernet cables are an HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, and a Canon Pro100S. All four workstations have drivers installed for these and can print to them.

We also have a Canon CP1200 Selphy that we use as a backup Passport Photo printer for when the main printers are too busy with large print orders. This is connected to our WiFi access point, and only two workstation have drivers installed for these.

None of these printers have ever had a problem printing with either of the problematic updates.

    EDIT:
Just to be clear, the printers we were having problems with were two Epson Surelab D700s, and one Epson Surecolour P5070. They are connected via USB to one workstation, the host, and are shared on the network using normal windows sharing.

KB5005565 stopped all three of these network printing from client workstations until we applied the uninstall update > registry fix > reinstall update workaround.

A week later KB5006670 stopped network printing working from client workstations until we applied the uninstall update > copy win32spl.dll to a USB stick > reinstall update > replace new win32spl.dll with one from USB stick workaround

At no stage was USB printing from the host ever affected

If I understand correctly, these working printers are not part of Network-Attached Printer Sharing or
Locally Attached Printer Sharing. Any PC can print to them independent of any other PC being online as there is no print server involved in printing to these printers.

So none of them are using a printer server it seems. The are all using Network-Attached Printing where every PC talk to the printer directly through the network point-to-point.
