    Unhelpful response to update issue

As a result of failing to install Ear Trumpet from the Store successfully I have got notifications saying I need to update Windows, which I have just done. But I have also got a response saying that something has gone wrong with part of the update and to try the Troubleshooter. But then I am told no Troubleshooter is available for the issue concerned. I have not found any further information.

    - response from whom or what?

There is a Windows Update Troubleshooter, if that's what this refers to.

And if you have a failed Windows update, then you need to provide:
    - the build number of your Windows installation (as you were prompted by the forum to do)
    - the update concerned
    - the failure number/message

You should find some useful info in your Update History.

Given the error number and the update, you can do further research, on tenforums and elsewhere.

I am of course refering to the Windows Update Troubleshooter (I have no knoweledge of any others) and I have not found any information on the error apart from what is shown above --- asyou can see the information provided by Windows is somewhat sparse, unless it can be found elsewhere.

Did you try searching for that code on Google or your favorite? I did a quick search and there's more than one place to look.

    Hello @clayto,

Have you applied ANY Tweaks [ Third-Party Tools ] at all, especially to the WU process?

    Thank you for your reply.

There's no 'of course' about your 1st post, as you suggest, as it's non-specific.

Have you actually clicked the big blue button Troubleshoot?

Or run the troubleshooter from here as the message suggests?

As Paul Black asks- have you ever done anything to disable Windows Update?

    Otherwise you can try

I have tried to follow procedures linked to from Ox80070422 but the problem persists, along with other probably (?) related ones. The whole scenario from each launch is as follows:

While launching Windows, 'Updating Windows' is displayed every time, with a brief countdown to 100%
When I check Services, I find Update has been DISABLED again, and change it to Automatic start
Soon after that I check again, and Disabled is back
The Updating of a number of Apps is also not taking place, including the download of new Apps from the Store (but some seem to download during the brief time when Update is running)
In Settings, Update is shown everytime as being recent and up-to-date --- but Update History is no longer displayed when selected, earlier it was purly by chance that I opened History where it stated there was a problem with some Updates and to try Troubleshooter, which could not find any problems
What / where is the 'BIG BLUE BUTTON referred to above? I have not found it

I hope this is clear and I have remembered it correctly

    - your second screenshot your post #4

I think given the uncertain nature of your problem and the unlikelihood of a specific fix, and time having passed, it's time to attempt an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data.

You are using build 21H1, so you can download a 21H1 iso file using the MS media creation tool.First run some basic checks to make sure there's no underlying disk corruption.

    a. Download and run Hard disk Sentinel (excellent) - there was a free offer posted a couple of days ago, but this is now over. Functional trial remains usefully functional. Includes SSDs.

Check it shows green for each disk.b. If ok run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt.

    c. If ok similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

If ok, and you have at least 30Gb free on C: then
    a. rt click iso file
    b. click Mount
    c. open new drive letter created
    d. double click setup.exe

Update is now working correctly, I think this is due to the arrival of new Cumulative updates on Tuesday. I have experienced this before, a stubborn problem getting cleared up by the arrival of a fresh update. Update History is back and with some exception updating Apps has been OK ----- for a while about a dozen Apps were asking to be updated which was unsuccessful.
