Shortcut to Windows Update - How to Pin to Start?

    Hi

My third and final question of the day (!)

I have created a desktop shortcut for Windows Update and changed the icon to the 'Double Arrow' from the default 'Gear Wheel' (meant editing a Group Policy) but when I right click the desktop shortcut, there is no option to 'Pin to Start'.

The desktop shortcut works as expected opening Windows Update.

How can I pin this desktop shortcut to the start menu?

    Cheers

    Hello Art,

It depends on how you created the Windows Update shortcut, but the shortcut in the tutorial below will have "Pin to Start" available for it if needed.

If for some reason you do not have a Pin to Start in its context menu (rt click menu) then have you tried moving it to one of the underlying folders comprising the start menu?

(This is so much easier using Open Shell-free - even if you only use that to 'edit' the start menu).

Create Windows Update Shortcut in Windows 10[/QUOTE]
    Hi Brink

    To answer your question...

I right-clicked an empty area of the desktop, clicked 'New' > 'Shortcut'. In the address box, I typed in 'ms-settings:windowsupdate' then 'Finish'.

I changed the icon of this shortcut choosing the 'Double Arrow' from %SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll then clicked
'Apply' and 'OK'. Initially I got an error 'Cannot apply changes to this internet shortcut' but sorted this out with Group Policy Editor.

When I try to pin it to the start menu, there is no option to do this.

Going to Windows Update and right-clicking, there is an option to pin Windows Update to the start menu but the icon is a large white circular arrow and there seems to be no way to change the icon (other than resize it).

I noticed from your procedure (this link) that you put 'explorer ms-settings:windowsupdate'
(includes 'explorer ' before what I had put)

UPDATE: Followed your procedure and it worked. Many thanks Brink.

    Hi dalchina,

    Not tried that yet.

I'll try Brink's suggestion first and see if that works. If not, I'll try moving the shortcut into the following location: %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and see if that works.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
