    KB 5004257 failed to install - 0x80071a91

I appear to be stuck on 20H2 OS Build 19042.804.

Auto-update keeps trying but always reports:

    KB 5004257 failed to install - 0x80071a91

***I tried this Command Prompt sequence suggested in a reply on an older thread that seems to have grown 'cold.'

    Hello @baumgrenze

The error code 0x80071a91 means: Transaction support within the specified file system resource manager is not started or was shutdown due to an error.

    Please try the following:

Press the Windows button, type cmd and then select the option "Run as administrator".

In the Command prompt window execute the following commands one after the other:
    sc config trustedinstaller start=auto

    net start trustedinstaller

    fsutil resource setautoreset true%SystemDrive%\

    attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

    echo y |del%SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

    attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*

    echo y |del%SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*

    echo y |del%SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf

    echo y |del%SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

If you get an error message with "net start trustedinstaller" and "fsutil resource setautoreset true %SystemDrive%" write it in your answer.

The person who replied has not posted recently and does not answer a PM.

I tried using the instructions in option 1 of this Tutorial:

Read Windows Update Logs in Windows 10 | Tutorials (tenforums.com)

When I tried to download "Get_Windows_Update_event_logs.bat" Windows Defender blocked the download 'because it could harm your device.'

I lost patience and created this post.

Do I need to download the most recent Win10 Pro iso, reformat my system disk, and reinstall it?

Windows 10 reminds me of what I hate about my iPhone and the Apple way of highhandedly saying, this isn't how we do things on an Apple device.'

Please encourage me that the experience will get better, soon.

    thanks

    @baumgrenze

Might be time to try an In-Place upgrade.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Possibly a symptom of drive failure.

Unlikely, but suggesting that predicates the need to suggest the means to do so e.g. Crystal Diskinfo (free).

    That aside,
When I tried to download "Get_Windows_Update_event_logs.bat" Windows Defender blocked the download 'because it could harm your device.'

I lost patience and created this post.
    - probably because it's unsigned being something quick and easy people can use. Easily worked around.

I Now Have the Update Events Log to Date - Starting 2/9/21

I now have the Update Events Log that records activity between the present and 2/9/21.

I know I tried to update several times earlier. Are these earlier updates available if I set a parameter correctly? It occurs to me that a failure of an earlier update would logically cause these to fail.

    thanks
