New 7 Pro 64 installation can't download: site certificates?

Today, I took out an old two-disk laptop that's been in a drawer since it stopped working about 7 years ago, installed an old SSD where I had long ago removed its main disk, whipped out one of my original Pro 64 SP1 installation CDs, and successfully installed the OS. It even got into my home wi-fi without trouble. And I got it authenticated and activated by phone. But when I tried to update the Defender base, it gave me "invalid site certificate" messages. Same for an attempt to get Malwarebytes Free, and an attempt to get Windows Update to work. It searched for a bit, and then said something about redirection to a site whose certificate was invalid.

It was fun, but it's going nowhere if I can't access downloads.

Anybody know what the problem might be? Is there a fix?

I was working on a Win7 the other day and seems a number of sites are no longer supporting Win7 and earlier since mainstream support for them has been discontinued. I've been in a few offices that are still running Win7 but I think they are paying for extended support and probably due to the proprietary software they need until those companies update to the latest Windows.

Is the time and date correct?

    @ Berton @ tomdsr

Yes, I changed the date from 2015 and set the clock, and of course I'm aware that I was running a retired horse today and not expecting to succeed even as much as I did. But an idea just occurred to me: could I be running on a DNS cache that's seven years old? Am I being sent to the wrong places when I type common names in the address bar? (I may not be saying this right, 'cuz I'm not sure I know what I'm talking about.)

Just an odd thought. Maybe I'll try flushing that cache tomorrow and see whether the net treats me any better.

    You need kb3138612

    https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/e...ient-installed

After that, WU should work to get the sha 2 updates, which is why defender isnt working. the new databases are sha 2

Instead of doing the above, the easiest way is to use simplix .https://update7.simplix.info/UpdatePack7R2.exe

Put the netframework .wa file net-framework-48-for-windows-7

and the vcredist .wa file vc runtimes

next to update7r2 ( in the same directory/folder). Then just run the updatepack and it will scan and install the updates your system needs, restarting and cleaning up when needed and it installs the .wa at the end.

I did a little project for updating the installation media - which you dont need to do. You can just run simplix because you have already installed the os.

    @SIW2 (with thanks)

I am now looking at vcredist_x64_Win7...WA, dotNetFx48_20210...WA, and UpdatePack7R2+.exe sitting on this (W10) comp, and looking forward to feeding them to the old horse to make her feel better.

If you see anything wrong in the list above, please let me know. Thank you again for this help.

    [update]

    That went beautifully. True wizardry.
Now I have set Windows update to search for updates, and it's been running for about 45 mins so far. That seem ok?

    [update]

Done. 15 updates found. Defender scanned and asked for definition updates.
