Most updates no longer install - tried many things. Help please!

    Hello chaps!

Strange problem: As of last month, most updates do not install on my Win10 Pro machine, e.g.
    KB5004331
    KB5004237
    KB5004296

    Error code: 0x800f0845

Drivers and some updates install fine however.

    Things I have tried:

    1. SFC /Scannow and DISM Restorehealth

    2. Attempted reading CBS.Log, Setuperr.log, setupact.log (all attached).

    3. In place upgrade online with updates - failed with 'Failed on Second Boot' problem: 0xc1900101 - 0x40017

    4. In place upgrade from ISO - WITHOUT updates - successfully installed however updates still do not install once in windows environment.

    5. Some googling mentioned that it could be a driver issue, so unplugged ALL USB devices and disabled everything in the BIOS including storage controllers / USB etc - problem persists.

    6. Windows update reset

    7. Updated ALL drivers manually and using Snappy

    8. Probably other things which I have forgotten to mention.

I'm at the end of my rope chaps. My only caveat is that I do not wish to lose my installed apps and files - I am sure it will work if I wipe everything and start afresh, however that is not what I would call "success" :)

Help would be appreciated - thank you!

    3. In place upgrade online with updates - failed with 'Failed on Second Boot' problem: 0xc1900101 - 0x40017
This is typical of a driver-related issue. It may be related to a 3rd party program's driver.

Thanks for the log files. Please download and run setupdiag.exe (free from MS).
This attempts to analyse your upgrade log files and match against known cases and give a short report.

However you also report error code 0x80004005 which suggests
Solution for Failed Windows 10 Update Installation Error 0x80004005
    - something quite different.

    Further setuperr.log only has
    2021-08-03 03:10:26, Error [RelPost.exe] IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY failed: 0x1

Please note that complex upgrade failures can be very hard to resolve, and very time-consuming. @zbook and @Tekkie Boy
have helped some in a number of cases.

Do you use disk imaging regularly as is so often recommended here? Do you have a disk image you could restore before this problem arose?

The forum prompted you (twice) to provide your full build number (so we don't have to keep asking people):

    Considering
    3. In place upgrade online with updates - failed with 'Failed on Second Boot' problem: 0xc1900101 - 0x40017

    4. In place upgrade from ISO - WITHOUT updates - successfully installed however updates still do not install once in windows environment.
Would the first then have been an upgrade to a higher build, whilst the second was an iso of the same major build? Please explain.

You may find the description of the second boot phase helpful:

What security software are you using?

    Considering your setuperr.log see:

I've got very limited time in which the computer can be tuned up.
The tune up may or may not fix the failure to upgrade.
Indicate if you want to run the tune up steps.
An alternative is to save files and reinstall Windows, drivers, and applications.

List any installed or recently installed/uninstalled non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus
    b) firewall
    c) drive encryption

    Code:
    2021-08-03 05:04:17, Info CBS InternalOpenPackage failed for Package_for_KB3025096~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.4.1.0 [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]

Check to see if there’s any BIOS updates.

Thank you all for the replies.

After spending the whole day doing trial and error, thanks to your insights, I managed to narrow it down to the caching software for my Optane drive - primocache.

Fully updated now without problems - thanks to you guys for the encouragement :)
