    John,

    In-place upgrade
    and
    Repair install
are two names for the same procedure.

    See
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - TenForumsTutorials
    - This procedure is how many of us routinely upgrade from one Windows Version to the next.
    - It involves downloading a large "ISO" file then running its setup.exe.
    - Repair installs leave all your applications & data alone. They merely alter Windows itself.

I installed W11 in a VM then copied the files in the Hyper V virtual .vhdx drive to another partition so I could dual boot W10 and W11. Somehow W11 activated automatically and W10 remains activated. How did that happen?

Works also if you create ISO via UUPDUMP and Clean install (on same machine you had W10) -- Always image old OS though first - so you can always revert or try again if things go wrong.

When you booted Windows 11 on the host computer (not in the VM) it connected to the internet and retrieved the already existing digital license for that computer from Microsoft Activation Servers and activated itself.

Thanks. Why does MS allow both Windows 10 and Windows 11 to be activated on the same PC in a dual boot configuration?

Because it would cost them too much money and cause too many problems for them not to.

Hmm did you do that from the Settings menu in 10? as I am a little confused by what you mean by in-place upgrade. Sorry mate am not that savvy.
In-place upgrade means upgrading Windows with the same or later version and build, than currently installed Windows. When done using the same version and build than currently installed Windows, it's called a Repair Install, and when done with a later version / build, it's called an Upgrade Install.

Both Repair and Upgrade installs are done in-place, meaning their keep all installed software and apps, all user accounts, and all settings, hence the name in-place upgrade.

In-place upgrade can be done either from Windows Update in Settings, allowing WU to download and install a later Windows build, from a USB or DVD install media containing Windows installation files, from a folder in another drive than Windows system drive containing Windows installation files, or from a mounted Windows ISO.

Thanks Kari one of the points you highlighted like someone has done is that I keep my own personalized set-up that is one of my main concerns. My other of course is the short time that they allow you to revert back to 10 if you don't like 11.

Make a new system image before "upgrading" to 11. Then you can wait as long as you want before reverting to 10.
    - If you are not already familiar with system imaging then you can have a look at my ditty - Common system imaging utilities [post #8] - TenForums

    All the best,
