and
Repair install
are two names for the same procedure.

I installed W11 in a VM then copied the files in the Hyper V virtual .vhdx drive to another partition so I could dual boot W10 and W11. Somehow W11 activated automatically and W10 remains activated. How did that happen?

Thanks. Why does MS allow both Windows 10 and Windows 11 to be activated on the same PC in a dual boot configuration?

In-place upgrade means upgrading Windows with the same or later version and build, than currently installed Windows. When done using the same version and build than currently installed Windows, it's called a Repair Install, and when done with a later version / build, it's called an Upgrade Install.

Both Repair and Upgrade installs are done in-place, meaning their keep all installed software and apps, all user accounts, and all settings, hence the name in-place upgrade.

In-place upgrade can be done either from Windows Update in Settings, allowing WU to download and install a later Windows build, from a USB or DVD install media containing Windows installation files, from a folder in another drive than Windows system drive containing Windows installation files, or from a mounted Windows ISO.

Thanks Kari one of the points you highlighted like someone has done is that I keep my own personalized set-up that is one of my main concerns. My other of course is the short time that they allow you to revert back to 10 if you don't like 11.

Make a new system image before "upgrading" to 11. Then you can wait as long as you want before reverting to 10.
