How to get Windows Update working again on this system ? [Fixed]
How to get Windows Update working again on this system ?
Under Windows 10 21H1 I'm getting this message in Settings > Update & Security:
"We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you are connected to the Internet."
Yes, I ran the 'updated' script linked here: Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
Also WUreset: GitHub - ManuelGil/Reset-Windows-Update-Tool: Troubleshooting Tool with Windows Updates (Developed in Dev-C++).
And various other tips strewn around the internet (mostly does the same the batch file)
hosts file is empty (apart from comments)
The 4 required services are running.
Windows Defender (online and offline), Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, ESET Online Scanner, Sophos Virus Removal Tool, checks the system as clean.

There is some backstory to this system, which used to run Windows 10 2004 (19041.867?). Apparently in march 2021 something broke, that stopped Windows Update from running. There were some errors on the filesystem, that were fixed by chkdsk /F. Then I put Windows 10 21H1 on a USB stick and ran setup from within windows an upgraded the system 'just fine'. After the update only 2 users were still available on the login screen. Luckily the two people who still live here, so *shrug*. But Windows Update is still broken.

Ah, a private thread :)
Tried the Fix WU Utility from TheWindowsClub.
Afterwards the Windows Update Troubleshooter actually found some things fixes (which is new).
- Some security setting are missing or have been changed
- Service registration is missing or corrupt

Trying Windows Update MiniTool next.
The '♻️Check for updates' button returns: An error has occurred: 0x80072F8F
Ah, something to check.

Most people seem to say this might indicate the clock is incorrect. Well I'm pretty sure it's correct, and the sync now button works in Windows time settings.

Trying `chkdsk /R C:` now (also actually read all allocated blocks). Surprised it thinks it will take an hour on this SSD.
..only took about 20 minutes in the end.
