    Update fix failed

    Hi

    I have a Asus Vivobook X405u running W10 V 10h2 Build 19042.95

    Update has been showing
"2021-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5004237)"When I click on Install it shows "Installing - 0%" but goes no further.I have left it several hours and after about eight hours it says Install Failed.

I have run the update fix "Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat" twice
    and nothing has changed.

I tried a shut down restart but it still happens.

    What do I do now?

    Regards

    Daniel

Please perform the following basic checks:
    run chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt.
    If ok similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and report whether it passed.

Then run setupdiag.exe (free from MS) and report the result.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and report the result, including 'More Details' if any.

What security software are you using?

    Thanks.

    Hi

Thanks for your advice. I will run the tests an report, hopefully today.

I have a SSD Hard drive attached to the laptop through
    a USB C port.

Should I remove it before I run the tests?

    Thanks and regards

    Daniel

Yes, disconnect the other disk- always simplify if you have issues.

Note that the command I gave you should not require that the scan be run on boot- it's just a scan, no fixes. That it failed may suggest a problem related to VSS. You may well find therefore that creating a System Restore point fails.

You can boot to a command prompt, and then try running it, making sure the drive letter corresponds to your Windows partition.

There is a VSS check tool here:
Free Diagnostics & Repair for Volume Shadow Copy Service

and Macrium Reflect's boot disk includes a VSS repair tool.

Another is available in Tweaking.com's free repair tool.

Just leave it, do nothing. The info will have been sent to MS and later on it will probably go through without any problems.

That happened on my Laptop with one of the two recent cumulative updates, a couple of days later it was done.

Nothing wrong with running chkdsk, sfc, DISM, update troubleshooter etc, now and again that is a good thing to do as always.

I'm not sure how this forum works but I am lost, I cannot follow the tread.

Either way the fixes seem to have worked but update is not working.

    I think I'll do a clean install.

    Cheers

    Thank you for your reply.

The forum is free. You get voluntary not necessarily expert help from people in their free time.

There is no guarantee- we cannot see your PC. Often respondents have to take a best guess based on limited info.

You may prefer to try an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data. Tutorial available- you need an iso file for your current build.
