STRANGE PROBLEM: Windows 10 Updated Itself to Version 21H1???

    Hi all,

Okay so I don’t know why, but my Windows 10 Pro PC has apparently downloaded the 21H1 Update. It's not fully updated as it says this in the "Settings":

"Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1

    Status: Pending Restart"

The problem is I never clicked the "Download and install" button... so I don’t understand why it downloaded the update and installed*? It hasn’t fully installed yet as it says “Restart now”.

I’ve been wanting to restart for a few days but I’ve held off because I don’t know if it’s safe to restart?

    What does this mean?

    Thank you.

    EDIT:

Just Restart. If you're on the latest 20H2, it's a quick install enabling already installed components from present Build .1110.

    Your reply is much appreciated!

    I'm actually on Windows 10 Version "2004".

Also, the Adobe Reader App just updated itself and says I must restart my PC before I can use the App again... Is it safe to restart when I've got this Windows 10 Update PLUS the Adobe Reader App Update???

It will update both. Same comment applies to 2004, as long as it has been updated within last 2 months, just not as quick as if you had 20H2

It's normal. Even though Microsoft states they won't automatically update to newer versions unless EOL for the current version you're running is very close they still do it. My three machines always get update to the next "feature" update randomly throughout the year. Mainly when the next version is announced IE: 21H2 is ready, so 21H1 will "magically" be downloaded and installed in the coming days/weeks with no interaction from me.

Feature updates remain optional until your current version is, as MS put it, 'at or near end of support' when it will then download automatically. In the past I have found Microsoft's definition of 'near' to be anything up to three months. 2004 reaches end of support on 14 Dec. 2021, not all that 'near' but at just five months possibly 'near enough'.

Anyway, you already have all the 21H1 code in your 2004 system files. The 21H1 feature update is just a small enablement package that installs like a cumulative update and turns on the dormant features. Nothing to fear there, it's not like a major feature update that takes hours to install.

Windows 10, versions 2004, 20H2, and 21H1 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. Therefore, the new features in Windows 10, version 21H1 are included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 2004 and Windows 10, version 20H1, but are in an inactive and dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on through the “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that activates the Windows 10, version 21H1 features.

Could someone please comment on my question about if I'll have any problems with the Adobe Reader App Update as my Windows 10 PC will need to update both to the 21H1 version and the Adobe Reader App?
