    Win 10 update strategy advice

    Hello All,

This is my first post as I am relatively new to Win 10 (don't ask).

    This is me:

    Edition Windows 10 Pro
    Version 20H2
    Installed on ‎13/‎12/‎2020
    OS build 19042.1052

Lats night my machine updated with KB 5004945 and promptly terminated my internet access. I had to do a system restore to recover !

I would prefer not to be a part of the Microsoft bug testing team, so I would seek any advice on how to minimise this sort of catastrophic occurrence.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks.

I'm not much into avoiding Windows updates. Some can be uninstalled.

    KB 5004945 is a significant fix for a security flaw, and shouldn't be avoided, if possible. KB5004945 Windows 10 2004 19041.1083, 20H2 19042.1083, 21H1 19043.1083

Hi, sorry,no idea why you might have had that problem- not seen one similar.. good you could recover. Note you can uninstall updates too.

Having done so, you will need to hide (block it) - tutorial available- if it always gives you a problem.

That said, its content will be included in any subsequent update.

You have Pro, so why not use its features?

Using the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) you can:
    - set updates to 'Notify' - so you get - yes- a notification of any update- clicking on that opens Settings so you can see which it is.. then you can read the News article and general press about it.. then decide whether to accept it or not.

    - defer feature updates (upgrades) for up to 365 days

Described in tutorials. (Google search e.g.
    defer feature updates tutorial site:tenforums.com

This gives you peace and quiet.

Many times disabling WUpdate and taking control has been described here- and 2 tutorials are available.

I hid it before Windows Update had a chance to install it.

I'm no expert but "Microsoft pushes emergency update for Windows PrintNightmare zero-day"
I check 'windows update' often, and got KB5004945 today. My 20H2 Dell is working great.

I received notification of the update recently. My 20H2 works fine without it.

The nightmare does not affect me because I have disabled Print Spooler, as I have no printer.

Sadly Emile Coue's self-help mantra modified in the 3rd person
Every day, in every way, It's getting better and better

definitely does NOT apply to Windows.

Sometimes peace and quiet and a period of rest and respite with a strict diet of no updates helps.

That was my experience staying with 1903 for 18 months or so.

Some of us achieved serenity while accepting every update offered.

I regret that experience is not universal. I expected there would be lots of issues with Microsoft's Windows 10 forced updates. I don't know how well or badly things have gone.
