    Strange update

So I have updates turned off! And tonight everything was slow and hanging for a long time so I decided to restart. Windows was installing updates (not sure how when I had them turned off). A very big update by the look of it - took ages.

Afterwards I have the news and weather widget on my taskbar (which I don’t want). It seems to be a forerunner of the new things coming in Windows 11 as I’ve seen the widget on there. There is nothing showing in my update history for today! So I don’t even have a number. It seems like something got pushed out without an update exactly?

I’m on 21H1 - newly installed about two weeks ago.

Don't know if this helps but if you right click on the task bar do you have a setting for News and interests, and is it on or off? That changes it on my copy of 21H1

Thanks. Yes I have turned it off now but it has slowed up my computer since that update. I am thinking of doing system (as there is no update showing to remove!) but don’t know how I could stop it downloading again.

if you click on Windows Update->view updates is there anything under "quality updates"? and have you looked under "uninstall updates" at the same location? there are more updates located in those locations on mine.

    How have you disabled WU?

What does your Update History show?

And your full build number (unstated but prompted for by tenforums)

tells you the last update if you search for that number in the News section.

So I have updates turned off!
    - So -- begs a preceding reason.

Yep - nothing there! The only update since I clean installed on 2 June was an Apple driver two weeks ago. I had WU turned off for 7 days. It seems to have settled down now so not causing any issues now. I’ve left the widget turned off.

Apologies re version - I just put 21H1 - not the full build number. But it’s the latest version as of 2 June.

    Hazel,

It sounds to me like you have downloaded & installed KB5003637 CU [almost 600MB for a x64 OS].

You should be able to see it in Control panel, Progs & features, View installed updates.

It should also be shown in Event viewer.

Yes that's it . So why doesn't it show in Windows updates as being installed? Found it in control panel as you said. I also don't remember installing it and had WU turned off. All I know is something big and heavy was downloading. Assume this is a necessary update? Or can I uninstall. I guess not as it says security update (not that the weather app is security).

After the big slow up I had restarted thinking something wrong with the computer and it installed then when I restarted - Windows doing updates - took a long time - which at the time surprised me as I had WU turned off!

I had a dos box flash at me and a few graphics issues after that - graphics slow loading. Still having that a bit.

    Hazel,

I have no idea why it might not show up in Settings, Updates, View update history.

Many schemes to inhibit WU are imperfect.

KB5003637 CU can be uninstalled. But it would be quicker to turn off the News & interests [weather] thingy by right-clicking on the taskbar then selecting News & interests, Turn off.
    For info
Microsoft introduces news and interests on the Windows 10 taskbar - TenForums
Enable or Disable News and Interests on Taskbar - TenForumsTutorials

    To stop it appearing
Add or Remove News and Interests icon on Taskbar - WQTutorials

Thanks Denis. I did that (turned off the weather update). Stuck it out for a bit. But the laptop is hanging a lot and I need to get work done - it is taking far too long. Also it's affected graphics - graphics and photos taking ages to open. This was a clean install early June!

So I've uninstalled it and set updates to pause till the end of July (they were already set to pause when this update downloaded). So I'll wait and try again later.

Apart from anything else I object to an unnecessary Windows 11 widget being installed when my laptop won't run Windows 11 according to the specs for it! I'd rather keep it lean. Trouble is that was a security update as well wasn't it? Maybe they'll change that and do a separate security update. And the widget as an optional. So I'll wait.
