    Want to shut down WU !!!!

    Hello, folks!!

    Would appreciate some assistance...Have a 32 bit tablet/laptop, running W10 Home, with 32GB storage on the hard drive. All I do with it is some email, and some Googling for miscellaneous stuff. Nothing heavy. Was able to stop Windows Update from installing for a while, but something happened, and can no longer do so. Every time it updates get messages that there is not enough room on the HD, etc. Had to reset the machine a couple of times already, but the darn thing just keeps wanting to update.

    Looked at all sorts of suggestions, and none worked. Went to Services, and Disabled WU. Found the following Registry edit, and, to my surprise, it only worked for a few days![HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
    "NoAUShutdownOption"=dword:00000001
    "NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption"=dword:00000001
    "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001

    [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
    "NoAUShutdownOption"=dword:00000001
    "NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption"=dword:00000001
    "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001

    Have no clue as to what to do next to stop WU from updating the machine.

    Any suggestions??

    Thanks for your help!

    +1 for Sledgehammer I have been using it for a while, The good thing about it is that it only update Windows defender. not sure how often it checks though.

    My scheme for managing Windows updates

    I prevent automatic Windows updates by setting my network connections, including default connections, as 'metered'. This works in both Home & Pro.
    Set Wireless Networks as Metered - TenForumsTutorials
    Set Ethernet connection as Metered - TenForumsTutorials
    Step-by-step procedure for setting default network connections to metered - TenForums

    I also used to remove permissions from USOClient
    post #4 by TairikuOkami - TenForums
    because this used to stop WU from checking for updates but it no longer does so. WU irregularly shows me a list of pending updates [that never download] and I'd have to disable automatic maintenance to stop the WU check running now.

    Security-flagged updates can sneak past metering. MS announced the security-flagged update mechanism in Making it easier to upgrade to Windows 10 but have never explained what can get security-flagged.
    Terry Myerson (Executive Vice President, Windows and Devices Group) in 'Making it easier to upgrade to Windows 10' dated 29th October 2015 said:
    Windows 10 will not automatically download updates on a metered connection unless there is a security issue addressed within the update.
    KB4023057 is the only example I've seen. This update gets re-issued roughly once a year [so it is also awkward to avoid by hiding it].
    Its installation does not inhibit metering and it does not cause any other kind of harm. KB4023057
    can be stopped by disabling automatic maintenance but, since it has never caused a problem, I no longer bother doing that.

    These are the methods I use to get Windows updates when I want them.
    - Windows defender updates [WD malware definition updates, WD platform updates] are done twice daily by batch files that are run by Task scheduler. See Update ... Microsoft Defender - TenForumsTutorials
    Whilst it's not stated in the Tutorial, all the given methods will update both Defender's malware definitions & the the Defender platform version itself.
    - WUMiniTool [Windows Update MiniTool - MajorGeeks] or the newer WUMgr about which there is further info at Toolkit Item Introducing Windows Update Manager - Win10Guru
    - I could, if I wanted to, run WU manually but I prefer WUMiniTool / WUMgr.
    - There are also several posted PS & vbs scripts that can be used to check for updates. Some of them can also be used to then control their download & installation.

    By the way, none of the Registry changes you list inhibit WU. I suggest that you undo all the changes you've made before applying whichever solution you decide to adopt.

    My 64-bit Windows 10 Home has used only 27.4 GB.

    And for that aspect of your question, see
    Free up space to install the latest Windows 10 feature update - Windows Help
    which suggests, amongst other things, connecting an external drive for WindowsUpdate to use as working space while it is installing the update.

    Best of luck,

    Thank you all for the replies!! Much appreciated.

    Would prefer to do something in W10 itself, rather than installing a third party program, or using an external hard drive, etc.

    Is this possible for 32 bit W10 Home??
