"Your device is missing important security and quality fixes" won't go

That message won't go away despite multiple pressing the "Check for updates" button under the Windwos update settings page title "You are not up to date".

Hourglass appears............... then "checking for updates" for 10 to 30 seconds.... then nothing, back to square one: You are not up to date / check for updates.

    version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1556)

    - - - Updated - - -

Then I went to Microsoft's "get help" app, went thru the steps while chatting with a robot/auto-assistant and got this suggestion that I should go to a nonexistent page and download "update troubleshooter" (after I deliberately said "yes" on the "do you see 0x... error message?" question (even tho that's not what I see). Otherwise if I say "no" the app will declare the problem solved and shut itself. Apparently the app is unaware that some update problems don't come with a code.

Believe it or not, that hyperlink went to this page:

Hi, you're on an old build (1909).

If MS isn't offering you a feature update (upgrade) and since you're past end of service for that build (no more routine updates) - well that means you're not up to date, but WU isn't offering you the upgrade.

    This
    a. may be MS's Safeguard protection- compatibility
    or
    b. e.g. for people with Pro - because they have deferred feature updates

Your device seems to be from 2011. Could be there's a compatibility issue.
There's absolutely no guarantee that devices never designed for Win 10 will continue to work with successive feature updates.

Feel free of course to experiment e.g.
    a. Create a current disk image of all O/S partitions (you are using disk imaging I hope)
    b. either
    - use the tutorial to bypass Safeguard and attempt and upgrade and see what happens
    - download an iso file for 21H1 and perform the upgrade using that.

If you do... take precautions. Make sure you have a way back. Which you should be doing routinely anyway.

I'm sorry but I'd not want to experiment at the moment. I use the machine for serious stuff (work + study). I'd rather let the update just sit there turned on & let it take care of itself / fix itself at a later date than tinker on it.

I can't quite fathom this mess as it is bizarre and unheard of in my experience.

I've been using Windows from the 90s and never ever have I encountered an unsolvable update glitch. Moving from Windows 7 to 10 was much easier as I was given a months or even years long warning of the coming change. Never ever yeard anythign that 1909 is "old". This is the first time I notice it. I mean this is Microsoft's own software installed on the machine in a factory. I didn't actively upgrade it to 1909. It became that from whatever the previous version was by itself. How could that no longer be possible and I run into this update hitch that can't even be identified, never mind solved?

Jerryiy...... perhaps a better term would be you are running an older OS version that is now out of mainstream support. That is why the message. MS has not always been tactful with their wording, and maybe it should read "There are new security and app updates for your protection, but we can't send them to you because your current OS will not accept them. Please consider upgrading to a currently supported OS, such as 20H2, or 21H1".

It really is not a glitch, more of a roadblock.

    Cheers.

I had my pc since before 2019 (= I didn't manually install v. 1909). It became that from whatever it was before, all by itself.

How come then that the machine never became 20H2 and now we already have 21H1? And more importantly why doesn't Windows Update fix this automatically? I have my update on auto.

Or else ask me to go somewhere and get it manually? (instead of bizarrely malfunctioning within the settings?)

And (once again) why does a MICROSOFT app of all things direct people to a dead website with nothing but "404 not found" message??

Thank you very much indeed for your replies.

    Did you read mine?

I told you about 'Safeguard Hold' by Microsoft. Have a look at the tutorial or use Google.
How could that no longer be possible and I run into this update hitch that can't even be identified, never mind solved?
Because you don't yet understand the possible underlying causes. Windows upgrades can be difficult. This is not like Win 7- the specification keeps changing- and MS does get things wrong too.
You have an old PC. That's my best guess.

You clearly know there are later builds but say you've never hear anything about 1909 being old. This is a contradiction.

My current pc is not too old. It only dates back to 2017. The windows version on it was 10 from the start.

I'm afraid this is a totally new mess and not related to my machine being old. This update "safeguard hold" or whatever, THAT's what is newer than my PC. So it's not so much my machine being old but that "safeguard hold" is simply incompatable with modern existing machines. Suggesting that it's not exactly a shining example of Microsoft engineering.

I'll see what I can do. It's a home edition so I may have to disable safeguard hold only from regedit rather than gpedit. Before that however, I'll try to install 21H1 via another method: the Windows 10 Update Assistant application that is downloaded from the link below (got informed of that after contacting someone, this time what appears to be a real person rather than automated chat machine, via Windows' "get help" :

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

If that doesn't work I'll disable safeguard hold

Oh yea sorry you must have gotten that from my profile. What is written there was my machine until 2017. I have my current machine since that period (now updated in the system spec)

    Hi Jerriy,

If this PC is for "serious stuff", it would be most prudent to create an OS image ASAP and then precede with troubleshooting Windows Update and/or manually upgrading the OS.

Many of us use Macrium Reflect Free.

Also, please help us to help you and make certain your 'My Computer' info is up to date, including installed winver.

Glad to see all is up to date and good. Check for updates to see if any .Net or others available now. 19043.1055 is the latest as of posting, but there may be others of a non-OS nature. Just a heads-up.
