win10 update lost alll my customizations

serious problem as my win environment is painstakingly customized to my liking - and all the programs now think i'm using them for the first time. while losing the settings win update also turned off system restore, so i can only get my setup back by restoring a backup - several hours of work.

this is more a lament than a question, but yes, i'm curious if someone else saw this, and also, once i've restored my win, how do i get the courage to update it, lest i get the same problem?

I would check to make sure the BIOS time/date is set correctly, then make sure the Windows time/date, matches the BIOS time/date.

dunno what the bios time was. is it the same as the system time? the win in question had the common bug of reverting to eastern standard time frequently, probably related to establishing an internet connection.

If the BIOS date/time disagrees with the desktop date/time... weird things happen to programs and Windows.

If you have Windows time flipping back and forth, this might be the cause of your problems.

It's been a while, but if I recall... you need to go to: Settings > Time & Language and...

...first turn OFF the automatic settings at the top, then lower down... set the Time Zone and turn ON the Adhust for daylight Savings time automatically.... then go back to the top and turn the Time and Time zone autmatic settings back ON.

Then the Windows time/date will stop "flipping around".

Hi, you've not said what update or feature update occurred that caused you problems. You appear to be on an old build:
    18363.

while losing the settings win update also turned off system restore, so i can only get my setup back by restoring a backup - several hours of work.
I imagine you received a feature upgrade, especially as you say SR points have been deleted. People sadly don't understand that SR points from a previous build are totally irrelevant to a different build. An SR point is totally irrelevant to and would be totally inadequate to 'go back to the previous build'.

There is a separate method for reverting to the previous build - 'go back to the previous build' - tutorial available.
    That's what Windows.old is for.

If you are using registry hacks, for example, or customising icons, be prepared for these to revert to default on a major feature update. Plan for that.

Implement these in a disciplined way so you have them ready to be reapplied.
Document them and store them all in a folder.

Better still- choose system modifications that are not modified when you upgrade.

Example: this was not affected in upgrading 20H2-21H1, nor was what I had upgrading from 1903 to 20H2.

You can read Macrium blogs and the forum and search it for free using Google.

Glancing at those, some offer possible ways forward.

Easiest option: copy your image files off the NAS onto a USB drive.

sure. i guess i'll have to do the usb-option - but it's going to be very slow, writing the backup to the NAS took a day, big file 1.5Tb.
