Over a network speed could be slowish compared to USB3.

A base image of, say, 150Gb at source, takes me about 12 mins SSD-USB3-HDD. Speeds of about 460MB/s - which is not 'real' but has to be factored by the compression ratio.

the network might be slow, but using it one would not have to read the file twice. for me copying the backup to USB-hd takes some 30hrs. maybe the USB ports on the old NAS are only USB-2. i wish we were still in the pre-nvme era, when one could be up and running in 5 minutes by swapping in a cloned HD.

now that i had some time in my hands, i figured out why macrium rescue doesn't see the network. it's because the stupid laptop manufacturers don't put in an ethernet port anymore, and winPE does not see a network card that's in a USB-c dongle...

Hence the hint by Macrium about incorporating a custom driver when making its Win PE bootable disk.

Given in links in my post #9.

good hint, but i think winPE does have the right drivers, but dell (in my case) makes the usb-c visible only later in the boot process.

nonetheless, someone should do something to alleviate this.

back up and running. i was saved by windows.old reversion in the end - but not before i'd spent days backing up my stuff. as i will not have the cajones to try win update again, what if i just put in a USB with later build of windows? is it gonna upgrade?

and yes, macrium is able to see the network if the recovery disk is created on the same machine - only, it still can't connect to it...

Random guess- if password protection is in force, it wouldn't be able to... just a thought.

Unclear- what would you be doing with said USB device?
Assuming the USB was configured as a Win 10 bootable disk, then logging in and running setup.exe from it would start an upgrade.

As I've commented before either choose your customisations carefully so they are such as not to be affected by an upgrade, or have a easy way (e.g. script or reg file) to reapply them.
