Could be that's now not possible given all the intervention.
Where you were originally faced with an admin account named by someone else, I would have thought creating a new account as needed and deleting that one would have been appropriate.
I absolutely agree and understand that I never ever should have tried to change the original admin account name. Believe me - I understand it now and never will do anything like it again! :)
Personally- I'd suggest what you will want to resist- create a disk image from which you can recover anything you need and clean install, or take the chance to upgrade your disk and clean install on a new one.
Sadly, I'm not resisting this but feel I need instructions. I created a flash drive from:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10. I used the download "Create Installation Media".
I have the original Windows disk and the number so that's not an issue.
In settings/recovery should I use Reset This PC or Advanced Recovery? Or....what constitutes a "clean install". Do I have to then reinstall all my programs? I have a proprietary database, several photo editing programs and on and on....
I'm not clear what it would mean to "upgrade my disk and reinstall on a new one". If I were to RESET this PC using the flash drive I created from the Microsoft site referenced above, wouldn't that be upgrading my disk?
I'd very much appreciate any step by step instructions you think I might need.
Have you tried uninstalling updates using the Control Panel, Programs and Features.....
Yes, I did try but many were not listed. The ones I seemed to need were not listed. I suspect this one of many complications of the Admin change.
Thank you so much for the help you've given me. I'm hoping that with a few more precise instructions, I'll be able to get the updates running again.
Using tweaking. com's repair tool sounds tantalizing. But I agree that I couldn't be sure of whether it could really work through the confusion. I appreciate knowing about it....maybe some day when I'm very brave :)
