Update wants to install same update

    Desktop Custom
    Windows 10 Prof
    Version 2004 (OS Build 19041,610)
4 SSDs and one 4tb partitioned hard drive WD Red
    64 gb memory

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64 based Systems (KB5003173) installed successfully end of May and now Windows update tried to install it again and the installation failed. However, Windows update doesn't seem to know this Cumulative Update was already installed and when I search for updates, this is the update that appears.

I think it won't install successfully because it's already listed as installed but newer updates are not being offered. How do I get out of this?
    Thanks

I would uninstall it, then run windows update again.

Hopefully it will find the newer update.

I also recommend you start using Windows Automatic Update Manager to do your updating manually, this way YOU have control, and you can also hide silly update Previews

Cannot uninstall the update which continues to try to install again

[QUOTE=AddRAM;2235913]I would uninstall it, then run windows update again.
Thanks for your suggestion - I'm having what I think is a strange problem.
The update that was installed but continues to install again and fail is:
    2021-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB5003173)

The update history in Settings shows it as having been successfully installed on 5/31
Following (above) the successful installation are two installation attempts which failed on 6/1. Windows update still wants to try to install it again.

I've tried every method on Brink's list of how to uninstall an update. The above Cumulative update (KB5003173) does not show up in the lists of installed updates on my system. The only place it appears is in settings/view update history.

I'm very confused. Could this happen? One issue that might be relevant is that there was a lot of confusion around the name of the administrator when I first received the computer. As a result I've taken ownership of Drive C and am the only administrator. But some files and folders have gotten the message much later than others. I don't know if this is relevant, but just in case....
    Thanks again.

    Have you uninstalled Edge?
    KB5003173 CU Windows 10 2004 19041.985, 20H2 19042.985, 21H1 19043.985

    What's the error number?

If you uninstalled Microsoft Edge and get a 0x800f0922 error code while trying to install KB5003173, then you will need to install Microsoft Edge (stable) and try installing KB5003173 again afterwards.

That should certainly not be necessary. Was your PC second hand?
Did you at any time try to rename your user profile folder?

I have no idea what you actually did then- it's quite possible to rename accounts without radical steps like that.

No I did not uninstall Edge. I even use it occasionally. Chrome is my default browser.
    What's the error number?
Failed to install on ‎6/‎1/‎2021 - 0x80073701 - two times

The computer was made to order for me by Puget Systems in Washington State. I've been very happy with the quality of build and it's been problem free except for the issue of who was the admin.
As I understood it, and as I remember it, they named themselves as the Administrator for testing purposes. BUT they sent me the machine without removing their name. I was very upset and they "walked me through" changing the administrator. But it never worked right and I wasn't recognized when I wanted to change some things in Windows. Slowly but surely I tried to change file and folder ownership to myself but I never knew what to do with "replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object" check box. I am now the only user and the Administrator but I know it isn't really quite correct. I also now understand that I should never have tried to change it - I should have kept it the way it was.

I've had the computer for approximately 4 years and Windows has always updated until now.

I'm hoping I can get Update working again.
Also, if you know how one might straighten out the Windows ownership mess, I'd love to be able to do that.

    Thanks

The system drive may be faulty.

I never saw anything like this in a while now.

Could be that's now not possible given all the intervention.
Tweaking.com's free repair tool offers to reset permissions to default, both files and registry, but I have no idea how successful that may or may not be, or whether it would be 100% successful.

Further, there may be implications for the accounts you've used or configured.

Where you were originally faced with an admin account named by someone else, I would have thought creating a new account as needed and deleting that one would have been appropriate.

Personally- I'd suggest what you will want to resist- create a disk image from which you can recover anything you need and clean install, or take the chance to upgrade your disk and clean install on a new one.

Have you tried uninstalling updates using the Control Panel, Programs and Features.....?

RJARRRPCGP: The system drive is a 2 TB Samsung SSD. I've checked it with Samsung Magician and it's good. Macrium also backs the drive up without a problem - Macrium usually won't do that if it finds fault with the drive. Is there another more detailed way to check the health of an SSD that I should use?

For Samsung, looks like you'll be golden with Magician. Also, that repeating thing, reminds me of Vista and possibly 7. I thought I ran into a problem like that before 10.

Dalchina: how best to follow your reinstallation instructions?

I absolutely agree and understand that I never ever should have tried to change the original admin account name. Believe me - I understand it now and never will do anything like it again! :)
Personally- I'd suggest what you will want to resist- create a disk image from which you can recover anything you need and clean install, or take the chance to upgrade your disk and clean install on a new one.

Sadly, I'm not resisting this but feel I need instructions. I created a flash drive from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10. I used the download "Create Installation Media".
I have the original Windows disk and the number so that's not an issue.

In settings/recovery should I use Reset This PC or Advanced Recovery? Or....what constitutes a "clean install". Do I have to then reinstall all my programs? I have a proprietary database, several photo editing programs and on and on....
I'm not clear what it would mean to "upgrade my disk and reinstall on a new one". If I were to RESET this PC using the flash drive I created from the Microsoft site referenced above, wouldn't that be upgrading my disk?

I'd very much appreciate any step by step instructions you think I might need.

Have you tried uninstalling updates using the Control Panel, Programs and Features.....
Yes, I did try but many were not listed. The ones I seemed to need were not listed. I suspect this one of many complications of the Admin change.

Thank you so much for the help you've given me. I'm hoping that with a few more precise instructions, I'll be able to get the updates running again.

Using tweaking. com's repair tool sounds tantalizing. But I agree that I couldn't be sure of whether it could really work through the confusion. I appreciate knowing about it....maybe some day when I'm very brave :)
