Error 0x80245006 when manually checking for updates

I'm on 20H2. Windows Update works mostly fine for me--automated update checks occur, and the last round of monthly updates came in without issue. When I launch WU, I see "You're up to date."

But whenever I manually check for updates, I get:

    Error encountered
There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80245006)
I do use VPN, but I've tried a myriad of VPN endpoints, and this issue occurs on all of them. I also don't think it's my VPN because if it were, automated update checks wouldn't work.

What could be going on here?

Hi, apparently error code 0x80245006 means: "The response from the redirector server had an error status or was invalid."

    Another interpretation is
The error code 80245006 means that a file required by Windows Update is missing or damaged.

This turned out to be a networking issue. I have a very unusual setup in that I use a VPN and also the utility called Proxifier, which can be used to control how applications on your PC make use of proxy servers. It's a great utility, but it can also get e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y confusing and cause issues, as I just demonstrated. I've actually had issues that even the Proxifier author couldn't explain, LOL. I know I'm making it sound terrible, but as I said, it's a great utility.

I configured svchost.exe to use my VPN's SOCKS5 proxy, and it started working fine. Previously, Proxifier was supposed to be simply ignoring svchost.exe traffic. This makes zero sense to me, but I'll take it.

Good- kind of vaguely aligns with the error message I suppose.
