I would try 20H2 if it`s being offered. No need for 21H1 yet.

The error can be generated because a function called, secure boot is enabled. Which does not allow the update to be carried out correctly, or it can also occur when there is corruption in the Windows Update files.
I did disable secure boot but did not turn off antivirus.

20h2 fails with exactly the same fault. So it looks as though the Window Update files are corrupted.

Still await Hard Disk Sentinel result.
If ok, you can download an iso file and attempt the upgrade with that-
rt click iso, click Mount, open new drive letter, double click setup.exe
Choose not to accept updates.
(You can even disconnect the internet).

The status of the solid state disk is PERFECT. Problematic or weak sectors were not found. The TRIM feature of the SSD is supported and enabled for optimal performance.

There is good news and bad. I used the mount method. The update started working. The system came back but all my settings were gone such as no email set up.
However I use Easeus and had a system backup dated 6 May. Ran that and got all the settings back.
Bit of tidying up to do, not sure if update works now or what version of windows I have. Going to a dark room to lie down.
I will return.

Back to square one. Update not working.
Whilst you could try an in-place upgrade repair install of 2004, I rather think that will fail in the same way.
Do you have an earlier disk image? I normally keep 4 successive ones- base + up to 4 differentials.

The best I can come up with is an Easus ISO dated 18 Jan 2021.
This is before
Last update that went through:
MS Office 2010 (KB4493143) 32 bit
03/02/21
Looks as though it is good news.
Started with Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.746) 64 bit - No updates
This time I used an ISO for 2004. This time it worked and kept all data and apps.
This gave me 19401.264, now with updates working it has gone to 19401.1023.
Thanks for keeping me on track. First thing now is to make an Easeus system backup because without one I would not have got this far. OK I have lost a couple of weeks info but could have been far worse. Think I need to start making them weekly and not monthly.
I will write up some notes later in case it helps someone else.

When an upgrade to a later build fails it is quite commonplace to first perform an in-place repair of the existing build to fix its problems if simpler repairs don't work.
As you say, periodic disk imaging can be invaluable.
You still have 2004, and since then there have been 20H2 and more recently 21H1.
Whilst you won't see much in the way of feature changes, unless there's a safeguard hold on your PC expect an upgrade to be offered soon.
First thanks to dalchina and AddRAM.
To get system back I used an ISO which was the same as version I had installed.
I disabled Secure Boot in the bios and turned off the firewall and antivirus.
But beware during the previous attempts I completely lost my system and had to use a disk image.
