Is this 'Optional quality update' worth installing?

My Windows 10 installation 20H2 64 bit is up to date but the Settings menu Windows Update offers this so-called quality update: '2021-05 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5003214)'

Some of these updates can take a very long time both to download and install and I've read reports of updates creating chaos. Is this a worthwhile exercise? My PC is currently working well after a week of trauma so I'm reluctant to stir up what could be yet another hornet's nest.

See if you're affected by any of the issues it addresses:
    KB5003214 Windows 10 2004 19041.1023, 20H2 19042.1023, 21H1 19043.1023

There's a thread per update per build in the News section, with comments following.

    I noted this one:
Updates an issue that might display items on the desktop after you have deleted them from the desktop.

There's nothing in it that you won't get next Patch Tuesday, so no compelling reason to install it.

I have installed it on just one on my laptops, but only because I wanted to turn on 'news & interests' that it did not have yet. Nothing broke

    Geoff,

The Cumulative update "Preview" versions released on the fourth Tuesday of each month contain most if not all of the changes in the Cumulative updates that are issued on the second Tuesday of each month.
    - Everything that is in a Cumulative update "Preview" version is generally in the subsequent Cumulative update [the few exceptions are often because they have caused problems].
    - They are optional, as you say, so you can reduce the amount of sodding about you have to do by ignoring them and just waiting until next month.
    - The second Tuesday Cumulative updates are not categorised as optional.
    - You'll never miss out by waiting.

On the other hand if one ever contains something you have been dying for then you might, optionally, decide to install it.

As dalchina says, when you get an update notification you can search the TenForum News section for information about it & download links. Every Cumulative update [indeed, every update] has a thread in the News section.
    - You will also see posts there by forum members about their experiences since applying the update so you can always regard them as your guinea pigs and hold off if they report problems.
    - Some Windows updates have created chaos. The vast majority have not. You can be guided by the guinea pigs.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Thanks for drawing attention to that bit. Could it really be that the Desktop Refresh issue is going to be tackled after more than two decades?

Sorry, got to sign off & get the camera out. There's a herd of pigs flying past my front window.

    All the best,

I don't think I've ever been desperate for any OS updates! All I'm really interested are security and/or speed improvements.

I just regard the OS (and for that matter my ISP) as a transparent window for access to the websites that interest me ... mostly ones involving toy aeroplanes (my icon is the 58" ws Gypsy Moth I built a couple of years ago) and pedal cycles (I've been watching the Giro d'Italia most of the day on Eurosport).

But thanks everyone for the heads up. I hadn't realised (or noticed) the OS updates are so accurately timed. I'll check out the News threads in future.
