Windows 10 Laptop stuck in update upto 3 hours then rollsback update

    Hi,
I have a problem with my Windows 10 HP Envy Laptop
It is not able to apply any updates. It tries to update every time I restart and says "Working on updates 1%. Dont turn off your PC. It will take a while". Then slowly it goes to 2% then 3% and it takes 30 minutes or so and then reaches 15% or so and then again starts from 1% and keeps repeating for a couple of hours. Max it goes to is about 30-40%.
Finally after 2 -3 hours it says "Unable to apply updates rolling back changes" and then lets me into the Home Login screen.
As a result, in the power option I see only "Update and restart" and "update and shutdown". So if I choose this then it will again repeat the same thing and it takes 3 hours for me to get in. So to avoid this my only option is to not shut it down but just leave it on because whenever I restart it, it takes 3 hours to let me in to the login screen .
So to summarize every time it tries to do windows update it gets stuck as mentioned above for 2-3 hours and then rolls back and never does the update and then next time if I shutdown and restart it does the same thing every time.
So can you please advise how I can get this Windows update done successfully without get stuck and without eventually undoing the changes.
I have attached a screenshot it shows when doing the updates which it keeps displaying for a couple of hours with just the percentage changing slowly till about 30% in 3 hours or so before it finally rolls back the changes as it is not able to do the update for some reason.
Please advise Windows 10 Laptop stuck in update upto 3 hours then rollsback update-windowserror.jpg
Your response will be much appreciated.

Laptop: HP Envy x360 m6 convertible laptop
    processor: Core i-5
    OS: Windows 10 Home

Hi, first in order to get control and so your PC is at least usable for normal purposes. consider using one of these:
Enable or Disable Pause Updates Feature in Windows 10
Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10
Using CMD script and VBScript to control Windows Update

    for example.

Next, anyone responding needs your current build number. The forum prompted you thus:
Windows 10 Laptop stuck in update upto 3 hours then rollsback update-win-10-version.png

Next, we need to know which update (or presumably upgrade) is being attempted.
Please post a screenshot of your Update History, thus:
Windows 10 Laptop stuck in update upto 3 hours then rollsback update-screenshot-.png

Also please post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager such as Minitool Partition Wizard (not Disk Management).

Next, please advise any tweaks, utilities or hacks you may have used that might be relevant.

How much free space do you have on C: ?

Please download and run setupdiag.exe from MS. This attempts to analyse the upgrade log files.

History: (so often omitted by posters)
    - has this PC been in regular use?
    - when do you believe any update was last successfully applied?

The laptop appears to be from around 2017, so fairly recent.

    Hi Dalchina

Sorry for the delayed response. I have gathered all the information you asked for and compiled them in my response below with the necessary screenshots to support them.

    (1) Regarding whether I am able to use my Laptop or not , I am able to because as mentioned in my problem description , after taking 3 hours to update, it fails and finally comes to login screen where it lets me in once I login. As of now the solution is whenever I plan to use the laptop I should start it about 3 hours before my planned time of use so that I dont end up waiting for 3 hours for it to let me log in.
    (2) My Windows 10 version : Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1533)
    (3) Please find attached couple of screenshots of Settings->"pending Windows update" & Settings->Pending Windows Update-> Update history
    (4) Please find attached screenshot of my partitions using Minitool Partition wizard
    (5) I have not done any tweaks / hacks or anything. I just use my laptop to browse and do some Java programming using Eclipse
    (6) C: DRIVE usage: Out of 917GB total 226GB is used and 690GB is free.
    (7) Please find attached output of setupdiag.exe after it tried to analyze the windows upgrade logs on my laptop
Also please find attached the setupdiagresults.log generated by setupdiag.exe after analyzing my laptop Windows upgrade logs.
    (8) Yes my Laptop has been in regular use daily.
    (9) I have no idea when an update was last applied successfully because since a long time I had been giving this problem and I am not sure if it has been able to apply some part of the updates while some parts fail but lately I had gotten worse and worse to the point that now it fails everytime it tries to update .
    (10) And yes this HP Envy x360 laptop is from 2017 and when its up and running there are no issues and I am able to use all apps on it perfectly and even do Java programming using Eclipse perfectly.

Really appreciate if you could kindly review above information that I provided which you asked for and see if it sheds any light as to what could be wrong with my laptop and how to overcome this issue so that the Windows upgrade its trying to do goes through successfully.

    Thanks

Uninstall Kaspersky software using the applicable uninstall tool:
    https://support.kaspersky.com/common/uninstall/1464

Make sure Microsoft defender is on.

Uninstall any installed third party software firewall or drive encryption.

    Run:
Tuneup.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

Place the computer in clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

Perform an in place upgrade repair:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

    Hi @zbook,

    (1) I have uninstalled kaspersky. I was able to uninstall it fully from Control panel -> uninstall programs

    (2) Windows Windows defender is on. I verified by clicking the "^" on the system tray and saw the Shield.

    (3) I ran the tuneup.bat. It took a few hours to run. I have attached the output of this program below. Can you please take a look at it and advise if it raises any issues with my laptop ?

    (4) As for the next step of performing a Clean boot of the Windows 10, I have not done it yet because there is a step (10) in the clean boot instructions which says "if you could not run a program before clean boot try running it now after performing the clean boot " . In my case the program that does not run is the automatic windows Update that runs unsuccessfilly whenever I restart the computer. So I wanted to know if I restart the computer in Clean Boot will the Windows Update try to run automatically even in the Clean boot mode ? If it does not run automatically in Clean Boot mode then I donot know how to manually start the Windows Update to see if goes through fine or not in Clean Boot mode

    (5) Also I was not sure if you would first like to check the tuneup.bat output if the error on that indicates something prior to performing the Clean boot . So please let me know after reviewing the attached Tuneup.bat output, what are your views about it and how you suggest I should proceed.

    Tuneup results look good.

    1) Run the Kaspersky uninstall tool to get the cleanest uninstallation.

    2) Place the computer in clean boot:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows

    3) Perform an in place upgrade repair: (for this upgrade attempt do not use the upgrade assistant)
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

The iso can be downloaded and installed onto the desktop or a flash drive:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
    Download Windows 10 ISO File
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

If the upgrade completes without a rollback then your set.
If there is a rollback then logs can be collected.

    Hi @zbook,

Sure will do that and update you . But doesnt the "bad memory" shown at the end of the Tuneup.bat indicate any issue.
I have just pasted those last 3 lines here. What does this mean ?

    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>bcdedit /enum {badmemory}

    RAM Defects

That is normal output for that command.

If Windows had already found RAM that it predicted would fail the results would be different.

Once you have upgraded you can run hardware tests as a preventative maintenance check.

    Ok.
So the steps remaining now on my end are Windows Clean Boot and Inplace upgrade repair
For the In-Place upgrade repair, do I risk losing the data on my harddisk ? Do I have to back it up before I do the inplace upgrade repair or is it not Risky at all and can I go ahead and do the in place upgrade repair without backing up anyting ?

    thanks
